It’s Cold Out There

Yes, Christmas is over. We took down all the decorations and lights on the seventh of January. It was hardly a white Christmas but the snow has finally arrived along with the frigid cold. The warm stretch took me to the local trails but they were too muddy to ride. It also gave me a window to get some important house repairs done that I couldn’t get done in the cold.

I got a shake weight for Christmas which helps me keep in shape; burn those calories when I otherwise wouldn’t be. I will get my bike into the shop to be tuned up but I don’t think I can swing a high end trainer. Will have to pick up something less expensive soon to get ready for the race season. Need to be in shape and to get my weight down; below 230lbs would be miraculous, 210 ideal.

Snacks like these will not get me there, but they have gone with the holidays. Continuous tasks have kept me from the gym and kept me from writing. I will have to determine to write something each morning. The second book is available on Kindle and I am working on the next in the series.

More pictures of Ike to come. He is a nice dog. He has a few problems having been kept in a small space most of his first year. I got boots for Misao and she got me a pair of suede shoes, among other things, for Christmas. Some rolled heavy bubble wrap keeps them standing in shape. We sprayed them with suede spray.

Nothing engaging, witty or particular enlightening today in this post but you can’t have ice cream every day. Maybe next time. I have to get my nightly ice cream now. Yes, even in the frigid cold.

Many thanks again to my family that helped significantly with getting a new roof on our house. a great weight off our shoulders. Shopping II

We have a lot of these boxes from a business associate who buys glass vases. A good way to ensure your packages are handled with care, or maybe not as a video of a FedEx delivery man throwing a computer monitor over a fence on his deliver has hit the Internet. Any way we finished our shopping for the nieces and nephews last night and will finish all the deliveries today.

I was a bit surprised how empty the mall was last night. Maybe we will visit the mall Saturday even if our shopping is complete, just to contribute to the mass hysteria. I still haven’t bought Misao’s gift[s]. We got down to Chicago for a True Family Values Banquet Saturday. I told Misao maybe we’ll come down to Chicago for Christmas shopping next year, …if we’re rich. They had a beautiful tree at the Hilton Chicago.

Missed the last monthly Metro Mountain Bikers meeting. Had to visit my parents before they left on a trip and Misao had the car busy all the daytime hours. Then my mom kept us in conversation until 8:00pm. I had completely forgotten it was the big meeting at Ray’s. I would have gone to the wrong place. With the snow, actually gone now, Ray’s should be getting busy. Some say they don’t miss the snow and don’t know why people are anxious for the snow to arrive. Well, the Christmas lights look brighter as do the nights and day, and when the days are so short I think it helps lift the spirit. But I guess some people are just lazy and don’t want to shovel. We took this picture in the morning and I was surprised the snow hadn’t all melted off the walk by the time we got home that evening.

After watching the Tacx video linked on my previous post, Misao wants one of their trainers too. A bit out of our price range this year. Maybe I’ll get a new helmet for Christmas. Have been back to the gym and am easing my way back into a training routine. I really need to get in shape. Then maybe I could go on a ride like this guy for a worthy cause. Getting in shape and dropping fifty pounds are the number one and two fitness goals. I will decide how many WORS races I am going to shoot for next year after the snow melts.

I have been shopping around for an e-reader. The Nook and Kindle are the affordable varieties. the e-ink screens are their strongest selling point I believe. You can get a good model for $99, or $79 if you want something a bit more basic. Of course you can spend more. Tablets are the most expensive option but they are back lit. If I work on the computer with the traditional back lit screen too long my vision goes blurry, so I think the e-ink screens are a really important development in our tech oriented world. Don’t think I will get one for Christmas but if you, any of my readers get a Kindle my books are available for $0.99. The second edition of “Chuck Hammer and the Invisible Squadron” is available and appropriate for young adults and older. And if you are giving a kindle why not preload it with my books.

The shopping for a new roof is complete and installed. A beautiful roof and new gutters by a very exceptional company that did a great job. A couple of roofers with ties to the neighborhood wouldn’t even give us a quote. Of course there are other ways to say we don’t want your business ( like Ben’s Cycle and fitness has made clear). That is to give a quote that is three times higher than it should be like another contractor. New Years resolution; No more mister nice guy here!

Shopping

Yes, it tis the season to be shopping and we have been shopping for a new garage door among other things. Hopefully the new roof will be in place by the end of the week. The weather sure has come to work out in favor of the roofers. And surprise, surprise, surprise, the county golf courses will be open today and tomorrow. Sunburst Ski Resort is also open from this weekend.

I went shopping the other day with my wife. It was more a recon operation than a mission of acquisition. We stopped by one of my favorite bicycle-fitness shops, “Emery’s”, and checked out some prices on trainers. The good news is the days of $4,000 computerized trainers are gone. The bad news is they are still expensive. From all my research I have a simple analysis of those computer trainers that let your ride virtual courses from all around the world. Only one is fairly free of software problems, the computrainer; the most expensive. Their software also is a bit more complete in the total information one can gather to assist in their training.

Tacx is an exciting brand from Belgium, and according to my market sources very popular in Europe. One of the exciting things about Tacx is they have a steering component to their virtual reality trainers.

Elite is the most affordable in the virtual racing trainers, but the comments about software issues seem to be the greatest, though some say they have excellent customer support. You can find the Elite brand online in the $700 range. Emery’s has the Computrainer in stock and can get you Tacx within a day or two. They have a trainer testing station where you can take the systems for a trial run.

Of course there are plenty of trainers that do not have the virtual reality element. They can be much cheaper and it may be the option I must take this year; going with CycleOps. Also in stock at Emery’s. Another review suggested that a trainer will last you three Winters of good training. Something to consider in your financial planning and/or budgeting.

So Computrainer has set the bar high, set the standard, as far as software. Tacx sits on the leading edge of creating a truly realistic virtual experience. You can find a cheaper virtual experience, but with accessories it may still run you $1,000. You want a pad and sheathing to protect your floor and bike from sweat. Or an old school high end trainer with accessories could run you $500. The highest end Computrainer and Tacx will run nearly $2,000 with accessories. If you buy from a bicycle shop you could get bicycle maintenance included for under $2,000.

I just wonder why these trainer manufacturers have not gone in with Play Station or X-Box. With the Kinect and other motion reading systems one could have a real bicycle derby. Wielding broad swords and battle axes, slaying werewolves and other creatures, or ones competition, along a mountain bike route would truly expand the bicycling cause.

Black Friday

I hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving. The whole world was talking about black Friday and the war like atmosphere in search of a deal. Not sure how much of the ruckus was even about Christmas shopping. But it certainly was a beautiful day. I was busy with tasks around the house and almost didn’t get out for a ride As clouds gathered and darkness approached. This path is under Doyne Park and took me to the parkway.

We had a nice Thanksgiving at my brothers house. Which turkey was oven baked and which was deep fried? I made a double batch of rice pudding. I left one whole bowl for my brother to take to work the next day but I heard it never arrived. Misao went out shopping early in the morning, Black Friday not on Thanksgiving. She said the other shoppers were driving the roads with crazed looks on their faces rushing from store to store.

I had to replace this base plate on in our garage as it had rotted away, being exposed to standing water before I had the mud jacking done. Jacked up the corner of the garage as best I could and then took out the old and put in the new.

Here I made my own door closer from things hanging around the house. And if the bungee cord isn’t tight enough to keep drafts from pushing the door open, just add a knot to it.

And what could this be? When you create a tourniquet you need to place a stick under whatever you have tied around the extremity and twist it tight to really cut off the blood flow. When I ripped my arm open on a rock a couple years ago the cut was not too far from the artery. I don’t think a tube would make a good tourniquet and I have meant to add something useful to my saddle bag that would work as one but haven’t gotten to it. This works on the same principle. It is to keep the rocking chair rockers from spreading. The glue wouldn’t hold. My work never ends.

The good weather has been good for riding but I have not had the time. It looks like the weather will hold long enough for us to get a new roof before the snow starts flying. But some bicycle fanatics are eager for the bad weather to arrive. The Cyclo-cross National Championships will be held in Madison Wisconsin January 4-8.

My gym, Bally, was bought by LA Fitness. I heard on the news they would honor existing contracts which would keep my low monthly fees in place however I heard from others that the fees will go to $80 a month. Too steep for me. Not sure what the people I have worked out with will do. I find it hard to believe the prices gyms can charge and new gyms keep opening.

We have our tree up. It is a busy time of the year but I really need to set down a training schedule. Misao doesn’t like to see me write so much because she says then I don’t exercise. But if I could get paid for writing I’d be in the money. Over 550 post in just over five years; about two a week. Some posts have taken much more effort than others, especially on some of my more serious blogs. And then there are my books. Still editing and developing the second book though a rough version is available on Kindle.

The yard and garden could use a few more touches before the snow flies. I treated the peach tree on Thanksgiving as the temperatures were warm enough and all the leaves (all but one) had fallen. I intend now to invest much more time writing but wont let that keep me from training. As we advance financially I will pick larger more international races to train for.

Revitalized

It has been a long while since I went to the north and couldn’t afford to go hunting this year, but I ran up to check on our property and do a little work Tuesday. On the way I made a great decision as leaving the city my body and mind relaxed. I stopped at a rest stop to lighten my load, making the trip that much more enjoyable; constipation can really distract from a good day trip.

Though the peak autumn colors had long passed the browns and golds are very attractive and soothing. Getting out into the clean fresh air and surrounded by nature the stresses of life soon melted away. Or maybe it was just getting away from our stalkers. No, I didn’t take my bike. I have not been riding or exercising much and need to work it into my schedule. What keeps me so busy? A bit more work and now I have money in my pocket so I can get things done. Money, or the freedom it gives you to accomplish things is a great motivator.

This little tree we received from a grocery store over a year ago and I took it up with me to plant. It grew quite a bit since we got it but we had no appropriate place to plant it in our yard. So it is now has a new home in the north woods. it has lots of company. The trees on our property are getting large as I cleaned out much of the dense underbrush some years back.

I found another little pine tree growing along our walk and placed it in the previously occupied pot with some fresh potting soil. Looks like the temperatures will be good for treating the peach tree around Thanksgiving. had to wait for all the leaves to fall off.

Yard Work

At the last Metro Mountain Bikers meeting they mentioned that the leading outdoor activity in Wisconsin is gardening per some survey the State did. Many love gardening and we have had some beautiful days for getting the yard and garden ready for Winter. The little T rose put out a tiny bloom even though the days are short and cold.

Misao went to some event the local utility company was putting on at the baseball stadium. They had Santa’s reindeer posing for pictures with children. This one was not having a good day. She received some holiday cookbooks that will work contrary to the goals of my Winter weight loss program.

I was working in the yard and on some garage repairs. Though the skies were blue I did not get out for a ride. And today, after almost no sleep most of the weekend, I was wiped out and have been in recovery mode. The Packers are playing tonight and we are having a cowboy pizza for the game. Actually Misao will not get home til late so I will be having a cowboy pizza for the game; pepperoni, sausage, tons of cheese and olives. I really need to get a trainer soon for my bike and start working out in the evenings.

And yes, Christmas music has started being played non-stop on the radio before Thanksgiving. Can’t they wait, with the store decorations too? Starting on Veterans Day… Peace on earth,goodwill towards men. I guess it fits.

Grounded

Grounded today. We were planning to go up north but had to cancel our plans due to weather. I may have to go up by myself sometime soon as Misao is always busy during the four days of the week when I don’t have the car for work, and then we work weekends. I am debating whether we need snow tires as it would be much safer and we have a bit of money now.

I’ll share some more WORS photos to keep things relevant. The videos are grainy as I dumbed down the resolution because I had file size problems getting video onto you/tube.

People can claim how wonderful it would be if we all had bicycles rather than cars, but it is near impossible to get things done without a car. And our car is not just shared between us but is the second car for the family of the person she is a care giver for. Can you tell I want to get a second car?

But bicycles are great exercise and my exercise log shows I’ve been negligent. The days are short and the money and daylight time are going into house repairs before Winter really hits. Could use, and almost afford, a trainer for my bike but the second car is a bit higher on my list of priorities. It will get me to a lot more trail work days though those seem to be going dark, breaking into small covert groups.

There may not be a Southern Kettles WEMS race next year as the director has been under attack from those directing the Fall Colors Festival. Nothing like back stabbing, gossip and lies to bring good drama to the MTB community. They say a lie travels halfway around the world before the truth gets its boots on. I feel for the guy having to put up with cowardly punks with indefensible positions. At least the WEMS director gets to read what people are saying about him.

I have not been sleeping well or feeling too hot due to my recent lack of exercise. I am working up to go on a Winter training blitz. I’ll have to take my bike to the gym via the Hank Aaron Trails which now runs all the way to the county line. I’ll have to run the entire trail before snow closes it down. Some of the trail is not paved; gravel.

Yes the monthly Metro Mountain Bikers meeting was last night. Plenty of activities you can find listed on their website in the sidebar. The Turkey Hurl starting from Club Tap on Thanksgiving Day is one of many rides that will dare the miserable weather, or if it’s too miserable they will just drink. It was good to find out in regards to the ride that the Packer game will be the early game on Thanksgiving. That will be some game. Two fierce division rivals, both near the best in the league, to battle it out on national television.

Then the Santa Rampage is December 17th. Santa suit and beer required. The Tour of Tosa will be some Sunday at 10:00am when all good people are in Church Churching. I think it is this Sunday, maybe the next.

Look for great things in trails coming to Waukesha. New trails are being flagged in Minooka.

Perhaps most important to the greater public is that the DNR is opening their master plans for the Kettles as well as some other State Parks. Something that does not happen too many times in ones lifetime for those interested.

We wont be seeing much of this wonderful weather for awhile.

Yes I am all set apparently to attain a concealed carry permit. Going through an old wallet I found my hunter’s safety certificate, along with a ticket to the World Trade Center from many a year past. Something I thought I would never find. Of course I cannot currently afford the whole buying a sidearm and becoming proficient at it. Not because becoming truly proficient is required, but because I would demand it of myself. The ammunition and range fees are not cheap.

Has it really been five years since I’ve gone hunting? I have been pulling out my hunting wear, finding all sorts of neat survival gear in the pockets. Plenty of road kill, dead deer, on the roads this time of year with the rut on. Too late to plan a hunting trip this year. My guns could use a good cleaning as they have been sitting idle now for years.

The short days and long nights, the blustery cold winds and dark clouds, make this time of year a time to spend indoors, and the TV show producers are taking advantage with a slew of new shows. Some of a dark nature. Misao has declared with great vigor “Revenge” as ‘our’ show. Sometimes my wife scares me.

And if all this not scary enough, what’s going on with our food? The packaging holds smaller portions. The olive oil Misao buys has changed from glass to plastic bottling. Yet prices still rise. Then among all this the most insidious, hideous and suspicious of all plots unfolds before our very eyes. Wendy’s, that fast food staple now run by Dave’s daughter …Wendy, is now producing their big and tasty burgers. Burgers that actually look like what they have been showing us over these many decades in advertising. One can only imagine the reasoning, the devious intention behind such a tempting offering.

Could things get any worse; more foreboding? Answer me this. How could the garden fencing above be older than that shown to the left? The newer product broken and covered in rust while the older remains clear and strong, standing bold against the elements. Two words that strike fear in the hearts of all men are to blame; Martha Stewart. Yes, these are Kmart products. The more durable (older) of the two bought when Martha Stewart endorsed their garden product line.

Martha Stewart’s influence may seem benign but the controlling reach of her arts and crafts cabal is unmatched throughout the world.

Yes, the days are growing short and dark and reviewing my exercise log I found I hadn’t gone out for a ride in an extremely long time; weeks. So I ventured one day on my mountain bike to an eerie stretch of trail I heard of referred to once as ‘the art trail.’ Part of a social ride long past I have never heard of this ‘art trail’ mentioned since. The horrors of the ordeal obviously blotted out the experience, from the minds of those in attendance. A trail I first found and road under the encouragement of my wife as we were on a ride together. Advantageous to us, though we couldn’t concieve of why at the time, we flew by the one inhabitant standing watch before he knew we were there. Not knowing the nature of the diet of the inhabitants of this hidden neglected stretch of land, and me with my well marbled bullish frame, we counted ourselves fortunate to pass without incident. This is Wisconsin after all.

The arts and crafts nature of the totems that line this path of peril point to a single allegiance, to a figure of craftiness, a dictator of aesthetics; Martha Stewart. And if she has joined forces with Wendy …

What unholy reverence could this alter of handcraft be devoted to?

And what was the fate of the rider of this bicycle, now set in prominence over the trail as if some kind of trophy. Yes, I took my life into my own hands once more to capture these images. If only in the hope of providing a warning to those who may unintentionally come upon this trail of terror. That recognizing these images they would venture no further, but in consideration of their loved ones turn around and be saved. No. I will not tell you the location of this terrifying trek lest the fool hearted take it upon themselves to test fate. Yet, these arts and crafts omens of doom can be found here and there along most all bike trails, even those so well used as the Hank Aaron Trail. So prevalent is their reach, need I be watchful for my well being? Would this cabal of arts and crafts, and suspicious dietary practices look to silence any and all who would expose them to the light of day?

Having exposed this evil in our midst, if this be my final post, if you are never to be blessed with the inspired flow of wisdom and unmatched knowledge my words convey, never seeking personal reward or gratification for myself, you’ll know why.

Windy ! !! !!! ! ! ! !

The winds have been tormenting this last week. Especially hard on one when working outside all day as I have been doing much of the past week. But the winds, the skies, the temperatures and the fates for some were all wonderfully aligned for WORS’ final event of the season. Sponsored by Wigwam, one of the premiere producers of the stuff that goes under your athletic footwear, and I’m not talking about your feet. Fat Kats, the producers of this, one of the greatest of WORS events, did a great job as always.

The joys of mountain bike riding are only outdone by those of pushing. I have some good video and pictures that I will eventually get up on Flickr and You/Tube for those who want to look for any images of themselves. A Winter project that will require me to subscribe $$$ again to Flickr so I can organize the photos for the convenience of visitors. I arrived as the Citizen class was finishing and left after catching some video of the Elite starts.

An odd job left me feeling old. My body ached after the first day of trenching through dirt and clay. But feeling much better after the second day, then the third and having no real aches or pains after the fourth made me feel confident in my persistent youth. This and the Sweetest Day flower stand, standing out in the severe winds for two days, wore on me but I do enjoy the elements. Hope to get to our forest land up north before Winter sets in. And all signs are this is going to be a severe Winter for us here in the Midwest.

Sometimes my knees bother me. My right when I go down stairs and my left when I go up ladders. Not often, but it gives me concern. I find that loose fitting footwear may be the culprit so I avoid the loafers and sandals these days. It is barefoot or a firmly laced shoe. I believe I heard something on the radio some time back to the same effect. All I know is when I wear anything that lets my foot slide the knee pain frequents.

Of course the joys of grilled meat were far from absent at this latest WORS event, The MTB Challenge, leaving me with a difficult decision; beef burgers or brats? I went with a burger as our finances still don’t allow for me to splurge. When I got back to our friends house in Sheboygan I was treated to Johsonville brat burgers; The best of both worlds. And better yet my wife found bacon for $2/lb. shopping with her friend. The odd jobs I catch are also due to my friends. It is good to have friends.

I have concern over my health though on my latest doctors visit the basic numbers on blood pressure and such were all good. It is some digestive pain issues I have not been able to get checked out properly that concern me, but my weight needs to be addressed also. This Winter will be the critical turning point for my future health. I have not gone down in weight as I usually do every summer as I have been to preoccupied to train and compete nearly as much as in the past. Usual my weight rises every Winter without fail and I have been averaging overall five pounds heavier every year for the last many years. I must reverse this trend and this Winter, hopefully with the help of a trainer for my bike, I must determine to bring my weight down. Yes, William Shatner is overweight with a frame similar to mine and looks young and vibrant at eighty years old, but I think it best I try to drop about fifty pounds at least.

Golden Harvest

I really should take my camera out on my weekly route. The fields are turning gold, the pumpkins are stockpiled along the sides of the road for sale to anxious youth shining in their gleaming autumn orange and the leaves are beginning to turn. The weather is beautiful. I hope this Indian Summer does not mean an early Winter though it will get me to writing a lot more on my book(s).

My weekly drive also takes me by the Trek facilities here in Wisconsin as well as the major beekeeping equipment suppliers in the state. I miss keeping bees. The small towns have some very interesting small bike shops with rustic allure.

With competing out of my mind for this year the training has dropped in priority, though I am looking forward to our trip to Sheboygan this Sunday. I hope to get some good shots and video from the WORS race and Misao will be visiting with friends there. Hopefully the colors will be at their peak making the trip truly enjoyable on most every level. Hope to have many great pictures to share.

House repairs… They are unending. I filled this crack with a 3M product. The crack was there before the mud jacking of the garage apron which was done well. I took a masonry chisel and widened the crack so the patching cement, that came in caulking tubes, could really get into the crack and have its own solid presence, and the process also provided a clean surface. I vacuumed and brushed it out. It’s how you prepare a crack for repair. The learning never stops here. Learning and sharing about how to do things well is part of what makes life a joy. The cement product was a bit rubbery so I don’t have any after pictures. Didn’t trowel well (maybe I waited too long). But it doesn’t look too bad. I may grind it down smooth later.

I asked Misao to be more careful about spending money on frivolous things. She said she doesn’t. Another plus for Sunday, race day, is that the Packers play in the evening; Sunday Night Football. I knew the Detroit Lions would come back and beat the Dallas Cowboys last week because the Packers are never allowed to sit free and clear as leaders of the Central Division (is it the North Division now?). Misao bought two of these plastic popcorn tubs for football season. The Packers and Lions are now the only two undefeated teams, for all you international readers who might not be keeping up with football. The real football that all real men follow.

I have been considering going back to school for a Masters in a year or two. Today they have an open house for potential graduate students but I am unable to make most of the activities as our car is in the shop again. Just when you start to get ahead something happens.

Shopping around for a good trainer I see that those computerized models where you can follow routes on your computer or TV screen are not as expensive as I thought. You can even race others over the Internet. My Capitalist Watch List in the sidebar has Internet sellers that have some systems on sale. It looks like if you get a good sales price you could get one with all the necessary accessories for under $1,000. Still too expensive for me right now, but you never know what the future holds. I know the best computerized trainers run several thousand.

The Brewers are going for it all this afternoon. If they win they are in, if they lose they are out. What steams me is with all these stadiums, including ours, being paid for with tax payer’s money we cannot see the game on broadcast TV, only paid TV. Everyone makes more money if the series go all five games. Just like my dad thought the whole losing streak towards the end of the season was all planned as no one makes money when you have a runaway team. Why go to a game if nothing is at stake. if it is all a scam the Brewers will bury the Diamond Backs today. The game will just be a formality.

Under the Weather

I have been feeling under the weather. Have a bit of a cold. Not riding as seriously after deciding not to compete, but only to take pictures, at the WORS Wigwam MTB Challenge; the final event of the season. The money saved will provide a bit of a chunk of the funds I need to get a trainer this Winter. The weather is already chilly.

This Saturday will be the Metro Mountain Biker’s social ride. I do not attend such events as drinking alcohol is too much of a feature. But it is known to be great fun and I haven’t heard of any problems on the roads on such events. The trails are a different matter.

One of the things which has kept me busy and worn me down was a wedding this last Saturday. They had a photo booth for all the guests. Not sure if they got the idea from Jay Leno. Two copies, one for the guests and one for the wedding album. Very nice idea. Here is one of the shots of us.

You may have noticed my wife’s highly fashionable eyewear. Those are actually my new glasses. I have been met by people I know, when they see me in my new spectacles, with laughter or remarks such as; “You look like a completely different person.” The progressive lenses take a bit of getting used to but are great for desk work. No problem with driving but I wouldn’t want to ride mountain bike trails with them. I have single vision sunglasses for riding (and driving) when I don’t wear my contacts. People say I look like Yakusa with them on. I just can’t wear contacts continuously.

My cousin also wrote a book and is working on another. He has done much research on the plane crash he wrote about (as a work of fiction) and the book is gripping for the unquestioned expertise it conveys as he is a pilot himself. That with a good story easy to understand makes it a great read. I am sure his writing will grow in complexity as he writes more. He’s an interesting character.

It was ‘World No Car Day’ last week and in celebration I spent nearly twelve hours behind the wheel of our car working. Another reason I got worn out. I need to make sure I am taking in liquids and food during my long delivery route so I don’t suffer later or lose focus while I am working. First time out I got lost twice. Some have asked me if I have claimed disability as my health conditions seem to leave me easily tired at times. No. I would never outside of losing some significant physical or mental capacity. I believe if I can drop some significant weight and watch what I put into my body I am just as durable as any other. I was surprised how well I road mountain bike this year considering my weight and the amount of time I trained. I was riding fifteen pounds heavier than last year yet I felt improvement in my climbing strength.

Still determined to get in a lot of riding this year. When I ordered my copy of “Ride the Divide” I also got a smart wool beanie that will serve me well into the Winter season, keeping my noggin toasty warm.

What other title will due in such a fantastic season of the year. The cool weather does not dissuade me from riding, I just haven’t had time and this week has a lot going on. But Misao called and encouraged me to get out and exercise so I took a good walk. A have a weekly job of driving all day long to make deliveries. Because I am using our own car we will have to see how much we actually can clear and if I will keep the job long term. Sitting all day is the worst job for me health wise so I need to be more attentive of getting more exercise and losing weight. I am already spending two nights a week driving.

Life is wondrous. This tree is growing out of a dead stump out of a rotting bit of bark. My new eyeglasses are ready. The progressive lenses are not good for riding. The peripheral is a bit blurry and the lower vision is distorted, but they will be great for working on my books. A whole new style and look with a whole new fortune to go with it. The contacts are for riding only though I did get some single vision sunglasses that I hope will work great with riding and poker. Many riders believe Lasik surgery was the best decision they ever made. If the progressives don’t work out for general use I may get another of the same design in a single vision lens.

They say football is too violent with many old former players now suffering serious brain injuries. They say the hits are too hard. some claim it was not like that when they only had leather helmets. Some say getting rid of helmets would solve the problem. My solution is similar. First of all I believe the three point stance will be illegal in the future as most people do. But rather than getting rid of helmets so players will not hit so hard I say get rid of shoulder pads.

This weekend is a family event; a wedding. Last wedding everyone said they were not going until three days before when they said they were. Since I had made other plans and had no idea who the people getting married were and no one could tell me how they were related to the family I didn’t go. But me and my cousin were buddies as kids and his is tying the knot. This legal and health matters keep me off the bike, as well as needed house repairs that I can now do as we are getting some money put aside.

Maybe a trainer would be useful even now as the nights are getting longer and evenings are easier for getting in a ride. It was nice to get out for a walk. I used to take lots of walks before our dogs died. Not sure if we will ever get another dog.

Rays MTB Milwaukee is opening October 1st with a season grand opening event on the 15th. I hear they are looking for a new location as mothers don’t want to take their BMX youth to the northwest side location. It is considered a very tough neighborhood though I heard of no problems and they have a security guard outside the entrance with a clear view of all the vehicles. I think it is just a far drive for most enthusiasts and gas prices are high.

Yes, football is back. What we all live for. And the Packers are off to a great start. What a game! I think they just faced their greatest competition this year. Too bad coach McCarthy still does not know how to coach the closing minutes of a game. Same as last year, game after game, along with special team flubs. We could have a relaxing roll away season burying all foes before us, but no we must risk cardiac arrest every game as he invites the opposition to run roughshod over us in the last four minutes of every game. Still I am predicting a 12-4 winning season for the Packers. There is talk they will play in London next year.

I had to open the season in style. I ran out and bought some coconut oil for my popcorn popping. Coconut oil has been vilified in the various forms of media man subjects himself to these days but I have found it is extremely healthy. Not sure why the movie theaters dropped it. Sounds like product sabotage to me. And if you don’t like to put butter on your popcorn you have to be using coconut oil. It just tastes great, it’s good for your heart and you can use it on your skin and in your hair… the coconut oil that is. One of the best purchases I ever made. Medium high heat causes the popcorn to take longer to pop but it is well worth the extra time.

Misao has been more focused on serving sizes as the years pass, concerned over my weight. We also try to set a general menu. The Sunday menu will be popcorn and other various football appropriate snacks for the first two games, topped off with a salad for the Sunday Night Game. Church followed by ten plus straight hours of football, can it get any better? Only if we had cable or satellite TV.

We stopped by Teavana the other day in Mayfair Mall. The young gentleman there was enthusiastic and committed to the world of tea. he told us about everything that was good for appetite suppression, raising metabolism, helping digestion, etc.. etc. He’s made an impression on our neighbor also. He spoke a bit fast and exalted the ‘real’ teas, poo poo-ing the rooibos teas as ‘some bush’ though I hear the rooibos is very good for you. Not that I am calling him a tea Nazi, he might take offense at that.

We ended up buying a bit of Oolong tea. I am thinking of using an appetite suppression tea. Work hard on the trainer this Winter, take in planned nutrition to fit the workout and then drink plenty of tea to keep me from over eating, as I get extremely hungry when I workout a lot. It is actually cheaper to buy at the Teavana store as there is a 12% sales tax on items purchased from their main facility in Atlanta. The tea Nazi can set you up with anything you need.

There was a long dry spell for this blog and I have lost a bit of s following. I have to be more vigilant in sharing my wit, common sense and helpful hints for near all one’s daily concerns. All part of my plan to RULE THE WORLD!

Grilling

Sorry Californians, no pictures. I forgot my camera when partaking of the endless generosity of the Wheel and Sprocket crowd that hosted what may be the final Odd Tuesday Ride. No pictures of the grilled meats or the three fantastic bikes they had for people to demo either, though by the time we got back from the ride it was already dark.

We ended up there at one point, as the fencing around the flood control work is down. It was again a joy to be out in the forest with my bike and the company was good. They say riding by yourself is more enjoyable as one is not pushed beyond what they see as comfortable limits, condition or ability wise. But these Odd Tuesday Rides are always no drop rides so anyone who rides their bike at least once a week should be able to enjoy them. A brisk pace but not too fast, stopping at regular intervals to check everyone is still there and to explain the trail system in the area.

And it is nice to ride in a group. Keeping a tight formation, at least to start, keeping one on their toes, accelerating and break in quick response to the one you are behind to keep right on their back tire.

Riding to the event made it well over a fifteen mile ride for me. Wasn’t expecting it to be so dark when we got back from the ride and I had to get a brat and a burger afterwards. So the ride home was very dark and my bike was fit for racing meaning… I should have brought my lights.

Here are the Morning Glories that cover our fence. It takes most of the Summer for them to fill out and bloom. Dreamed of that land of the morning calm last night and most all my friends there. (That would be Korea) We have a second batch of baby rabbits invading our back yard this year. They hardly pay us any notice even though we are into the R months. You know you shouldn’t eat rabbit in months that don’t have an R in them. They can carry a fever in the Summer. Maybe I’ll get up hunting in the North Woods this year, at least small game. Today will be yard work.

The WORS 2012 season schedule is out. I am planning to be in fantastic shape next year. Getting back into the spirit though my former adversaries seem absent from the races this year. Have to take on a whole new crowd next year. Have to get a trainer before the New Year. Emery’s has some trainers and other fitness equipment. A full service bicycle place with a side of home fitness and a slice of triathlon gear for desert. They always have a high end computerized trainer available to demo. I never tested the equipment as I never had the money to buy one yet.

Very few peaches this year. Alois has been taking advantage of the fine weather Europe has been experiencing recently and doing lots of riding. Looking forward to his next post. Renewing his glider certification is more complicated than he thought.

My mother is making the doctors look good as her surgery went well. Her healing is a bit slower than desired so she is still in the hospital after her heart surgery. Thanks to all concerned.

8 Mile

Mile per hour that is. Yes, I went to the final Wednesday Night time trial of the season put on by Metro Mountain Bikers, and busted the 8mph mark. One climb was eliminated but that was followed by a very fast fairly level mile plus section, also eliminated. I felt strong and fast over most of the trail. Just ecstatic over riding the green forest trails, hitting the obstacles hard.

They had a grill and drinks for a final party but I only stayed long enough to get my lap time. It was bring your own meat. I looked for a donation can they had last time in the past hoping to get a soda and support the cause but didn’t see one. I had brought my camera to get some pictures of the grilled meats but left before they started that heavenly culinary exercise in goodness and all things manly. And I know why California is the second largest state on my visitors record, being vastly surpassed by Wisconsin only after I began posting about Ray’s Milwaukee opening October 1st. All those vegans and vegetarians come to view my collection of grilled meat photos. They think no one knows what they’re up to.

Those Californians are almost as hideous as that conspiracy at the BBC. All their broadcasters pronounce ever letter of each word in their news reports. Listen and you’ll hear every consonant in words such as Wednesday, all in some perverse effort to give British students an unfair advantage in International Spelling Bees.

Yes, after riding mostly on the road this past month it was a real rush hitting the trails. I could feel accomplished as my long rides have paid off. Getting in better shape and losing some weight. Craters of the moon has been a difficult feature for me, but I not only felt good in the climb was going faster than I have ever. Just came inches short of making that final steep bump at the top.

Yet I am questioning whether I can make any more races. The cost is still prohibitive as we have to invest much into our home before Winter, I would like to be riding at something closer to 10mph for ‘sport’ class, my weight is higher than I would like or have expected, and working weekends I arrive tired with little time to warm up for a race, even finding it hard to get a good breakfast. Certainly I will make Sheboygan, if only to take pictures. I am at 267lbs and if I get significantly under 260lbs before Sheboygan I really should race. Was near 280 over the Winter.

I will have to count this last event as one of the three races I wanted to make this year though I only did one lap. The other could be the next Odd Tuesday Ride this September 6th. Wheel and Sprocket will be providing food and have bikes to demo. Be there at the Hoyt Park swimming pool! A one hour ride followed by food, what else could be finer as the days grow shorter, a night ride later for those with lights.

Copper Harbor is becoming a mountain bike destination. It was mentioned at the last Metro Mountain Bikers meeting and I heard it again highly spoken of Wednesday night. Some really enjoy the ‘Ore to Shore’ race (already past) giving the upper peninsular a growing reputation for mountain biking. Also heard Wednesday that the cult favorite, The Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival has been sold. Some wonder how that will effect the unprecedented attendance the event has been known for.

My wife will be back soon and we will be going to the hospital. My mother is having open heart surgery already an hour in now. We hope to be there when she wakes up if the surgery goes well and doesn’t take too long. Your hopes and prayers are welcome along with ours.

Four Seasons

The Fall Color Festival is just around the corner. An event immensely enjoyed by many and I heard they could use some volunteers. Volunteering something I have done much of this year. Not much trail work has been posted with metro mountain bikers but with fall around the corner that may change. Though we are getting out of our unsecured debt after five years of making no headway against it inescapable home repair expenses keep the purse strings tight.

Yes, Summer is coming to a close. I have not ridden the trails much. Most of my rides take me to the lake via Canal Street. That street well designed to facilitate bicycling, …sort of. They have those multipurpose trails along most of the way that I always see lots of bicyclists taking advantage of. But for those who ride on the road, as is their right, if traffic is heavy filling both lanes, they will be blocking the free flow of automobile autonomy. But it is a great ride. A good sustained climb each way, long uninterrupted stretches to let loose on, and a fairly direct route to the lakefront.

Here is a Summer shot of some young sailors I caught on one of my rides. Lessons in the lagoon at the Discovery World Museum, the Calatrava behind. Little tiny sail boats with little people inside under the tall ship built right here, costing the life of one. There is a power boat with two supervisors there. It looked to me like all the young children were most interested in trying to ram each other. I wonder of they even know about the movie “Ben Hur.”

Exploring all the ins and outs of the lakefront has been part of my training. The ride there is a bit of a drudge, not being forested trail, but when I get to the lake I want to just keep going and going and going. If I can justify the time I ride up and down the park or industrial areas along the lake finding all extremely interesting. Then when I start heading home I want to get back as fast as possible, which I then set myself to doing. A good training run but I should ride trails more. More older photos from the lakefront.

WORS again wins the Border Battle with Minnesota. How could we not defeat those who call soda ‘pop’ and still think they have more lakes than Wisconsin. I have to determine to get to two more races, though finances are still an issue. Finances will not be an issue in getting a good trainer so I can get in great shape this time over the Winter. Treadfest is next. Only three more races left.

I trimmed the peach tree early. Wanted to see what was dead and dying and what wasn’t before the leaves started to fall. Very few peaches this year as the cool damp spring was hard on the tree. This year I am ready to treat the tree as some as all the leaves are gone. We are getting some good sweet tomatoes out of the garden though the skins are still a bit tough. I saw a show that said when you plant tomatoes you should bury more than half the stalk. I guess that promotes extensive root growth. Something to keep in mind for next year.

Alterra Coffee Bean Classic

My dad got a copy of the New York Times, book form, from the day he was born some eighty years ago. Coffee was 89 cents for five pounds. Coffee is a bit more today, especially that quality Alterra Coffee. But servings were free at the Alterra Coffee Bean Classic at Crystal Ridge Ski Lodge in Franklin Wisconsin some ten days past. And while they had no schwag, free gifts for the participants, some fine quality race T-shirts were extremely cheap to purchase. Was it two for $5, if I remember correctly? Times are hard all around.

My first race of the 2011 season. A hectic morning left me with no breakfast and I lost my water bottle, filled with a mix of iced tea, Gatorade and water, early in the first lap. Spent a good minute at the single water station after the first lap. A fine gentleman offered me drink in the second lap. Still, I had few spurts of power after the first lap and was completely drained for the last two miles. I should have been twenty minutes faster if everything had fallen into place to my advantage. But it was hot and thick and I couldn't make the craters of the moon climb without dismounting. One of the several places I lost time. WORS is promoting a new video cam this year.

I have contact lenses as they were cheaper than buying a new pair of eye glasses. And do they make a difference! I hit a rock garden that goes around a corner and floated right through; first time ever. It was truly immensely advantageous to ride with contacts rather than glasses. I had a dark pair of wrap around sunglasses that Misao had bought on one of her dollar store shopping, it makes me feel better, excursions. They worked great. I think a lighter bronze tinted sunglass would work better and make detail snap more.

Many a kind word came from competitors and spectators as I raced. Better than a good drink from the water bottle, at least in the short run. Then some malcontent had to sneer I was about to be lapped by a girl. No one lapped me. I finished before the elite start. That is how I got the pictures. Demeaning others only demeans oneself, but such malcontents don't feel good about themselves in the first place. They just need a hug ...before they make headaches for everyone. And the first black athlete to compete in the Tour de' France died at a ripe old age of ...no! ...wait! ...just competed this year.

The race tempo kick started my body into gear. My recovery ride the next day was a bit of a shock, but all my recent rides have been strong. Trips to the lake seem much shorter when pushing hard in the big ring. And my weight dropped a bit. They say iced tea is good for weight loss; iced tea with lean proteins and bright colorful vegetables.

No money for this weekend's race. Home repairs are scheduled as soon as the money is available so we are still tight financially. I got to three races to take pictures last year so will set a minimal goal of racing three races this year. I want to be around 10 mph. Was still just above 7 mph at the coffee bean classic.

The yard needs some work too. Moved the Buddha. Put up the bird feeder. Am starting to focus on writing again; working on three books at the same time and have several blog posts I want to get out. Still need to complete a good edit of my second book. Thanks to Alois for his post.

SLO: Avila Beach

Ich berichte hier in unregelmäßigen Abständen von meinen Erlebnissen während meines Englisch Sprachkurses in San Luis Obispo (SLO). An einem sonnigen Sonntag bin ich mit dem Rad zum Avila Beach gefahren. Es dauert ca. 45 Minuten, bis man mit dem Rad den Strand erreicht. Hier sieht man einen Fluß, der zum Pazifik fließt. Über den Fluß führt eine Metallbrücke, auf der man bequem zu Fuß das gegenüberliegende Ufer erreichen kann.

Adapting to Conditions

Conditions require some adaptation. I will not go to the time trials tonight. With the heat and the difficulty of the climbs I believe it to be unwise. I could not have possibly completed two laps, as intended, anyway with the heat warnings. So how did I adapt? Did I just sit home enjoying our three air conditioners and dehumidifiers?

No! I went out in the hottest part of the day (100F) with high dew points and put in more than fifteen miles; the length of the WORS Sport course. Stayed on the parkway. Still some good climbs but not nearly as strenuous as Crystal Ridge. The goal; to acclimate myself to the conditions that I may encounter Sunday. made a quick stop at Emery's along the way. They also have a great remodel on their website. I will now tweak my bike and add another bottle holder. Yard work and home repairs will continue my acclimation process as I now rest in preparation for the race. I will register on site Saturday.

Actually felt OK during the ride until the last mile or so. My weight is down below 270 also. I believe the heat is played up so much in the news these days because people fail to acclimate themselves in these days of air conditioning. And part of acclimating is sometimes just to slow down, stop and find some shade in which to quietly ride out the heat wave. Much like Winter where at times one is confined indoors people need to adapt to conditions. In that vein we have been raising our temperature settings on the air conditioners as Summer goes on (80F). It will save us some on the electric bill too.

Here is part of the work around the new detention ponds. The picture is several weeks old now. The water in the river is still and very green. The bicycle parking at the new swimming pool is packed full these days after I posted a picture of the amenity here. I must have a whole lot of readers. Hope to get some photos soon from Alois and Misao is inspired to play on the dog theme in photos.

Misao bought some Gatorade and I am looking forward to my Saturday soba noodle feast to prepare. Whole grain buckwheat noodles are the best you can eat to prepare for a race. I speak from experience as well as research on the Internet. But, honestly you can't trust everything on the Internet.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Alois; July 18.

Yes, today is my Birthday and I have survived unscathed. I heard they closed the expressway in LA today. I hope it wasn't on my behalf. Misao was inspired by Master Chef to make me a cake from scratch. The whipped cream covers her attempts at writing Happy Birthday on the cake.

I made the Wednesday Night time trials this past week. A good one lap run of the race lap for next Saturday. Under an hour gives me confidence to race in Sport class. A lap people's fancy GPS systems have measured anywhere from 6.3 to 7.5 miles. Two laps for the Sport race should have me at the ski hill before the Elite racers start. Should be well off the course by then. have been feeling good recently; strong on the bike though my average speed is only about 7mph on the trails. Will ride near everyday and hit two laps next Wednesday before the big race. Then three days of rest, sobe noodles, oodles of noodles, the night before the race, some Gatorade and I should be in good shape to perform well.

WORS has redesigned their site (very nice) and I really enjoy Cycling News; I get their updates via facebook. Some controversy in Milwaukee over a half marathon they held for Summerfest. The director caught some heat but it is as always. If you're popular, part of the in crowd, anythings OK, if you're not, you never work again. And what about the BBC World Service covered music festivals some weeks back and not a word about Summerfest; the largest music festival in the world. What I really want to know is, what happened to Peter Day?

My parent's will take us out to Red Robin for lunch tomorrow. I have wanted to try their burgers for a while now. This robin is from the nest in our garage this year. Very friendly and eager to pose, his adult feathers still to fill in. The baby rabbits hardly give us notice when we come out. None of the lettuce I planted is coming up this year.

As we get out of our financial distress we have been able to afford more supplements. Fish oil being the big one that seems to have made the difference. Also not much fast food for the last five years might be helping some. Well over five years on the CPAP machine and I think my body is finally rebounding strong. Still need some medical tests I don't have money for, but I'll eventually get to that. Feeling good to be getting back into racing after nearly two years without participating in one. My weight is still too high, twenty pounds more than the last time I raced, but I feel stronger in some ways than before.

I have opted for contact lenses, as they are much cheaper than a new pair of eye glasses. Bought some $15 reading glasses for ...reading. They are much better for riding and I can now get some nice shades to protect my eyes and clear the glare. People seem to enjoy my latest book.

The fourth of July was another grill day. Burgers the general shape of the state of Texas were called Bubba Burgers. We road down to the Harley Davidson Museum where we had a good view of the fireworks. the fireworks feature on my camera didn't seem to work well, but the battery was very low. A small crowd made it all that much better. God Bless America.

Happy 4th of July. Misao and I plan to go to the fireworks by bicycle this evening. Not sure if we will get any photos. Veteran's Park on the lake front is full of tents. Does waiting longer make the fireworks more enjoyable? With Church and being a bit tired we didn't go to the parade. I will grill some brats soon. Yes, I am watching the Tour d' Fraud'nce. I guess cheating is OK if everyone is. I wouldn't want to be that supposed spectator that caused that first stage carbon jam. I enjoy watching time trials.

I had some good long rides hitting the local trails. On two of those rides I stopped by Emery's. First to get some brake pads, then to get some new tubes so I don't have to pump up my tires everyday. I wonder if the tube and tire companies even care about their products only lasting one year. I could blame the Chinese but I could also blame the capitalist establishment just wanting to sell more products. Not sure if that is really an environmentally sustainable approach... actually I am sure it's not. The connection between the two Oak Hill trails was too muddy to ride a few days ago. Some parts of the trails along the river are infested with cow parsnip ...nasty stuff; hogweed.

The old pads. Those pads were a bit tricky to replace and get them straight and flat with the rims. Continual adjustments while I ride for several days until the brakes settle to where they like. I might take the whole assemblies off to clean and lube.

I put my old knobby tire on the rear wheel to replace my failing back tire. It was original with the bike and was on the front wheel for years, plus two hard race seasons, before I bought new tires. It has more than enough tread to last the season. Still hoping to get to several races. The 'Ride the Divide' is over.

The new pool has in Hoyt Park has this nice new bicycle rack area. The Milwaukee Brewers had a ride to the game day. Not sure how that worked out. It sounds like they added more bike racks at the stadium.

Still having lots of problems with the Internet, I suspect man made. I wrote on three blogs Friday and my next books, yes book'S', are growing in my mind. After I get to the eye doctor and get some new eye wear the task of writing will be so much easier. I have been having lots of problems with my ancient glasses and I need bifocals. I think I will go back to a rounder frame. Life was batter when I wore round frames.

About time to cook those brats. Steven Raichlen was on public television all day yesterday. Right after the Tour coverage is over.

The Wheel on the Bike Goes Bump Bump Bump

Yes, I got in a good ride shortly before noon the other day when suddenly the bike started going bump bump bump. Inspecting my tire, I found the sidewall is failing. Another expense I can do without but I have to buy a new tire. WORS has recommended this tire; XR2 TLR 26". Looks good to me. The tread on my tire was also nearly gone, but you'd think a tire would last more than one season. I suspect it has something to do with being made in China. So I will have two different wheels with two different tires on my bike. Then I need a new bottom bracket, and the fore mentioned tubes and break pads. Should be set to race then... after I lose about twenty pounds.

Still I continued my ride as I thought I better get in as much riding as possible as long as I was out and wouldn't be going again until I got the new tire. Traveled the paved Hank Aaron Trail west. This is well used. People taking walks on their lunch breaks, mothers out with their children, bicyclers, joggers and the homeless all taking advantage. It is the green and relative quiet that is attractive. And here is a good segway to promote the Fresh Air Fund, though I am a bit late. It appears a cause based on sound ideas. Being closer to nature is good for all of us. Groups now contact me to promote their causes on this blog. Not sure where they get their stats. My counter tells me one thing, blogger stats tell me another, so I am unclear which, if any, source is correct as far as Internet traffic is concerned. I came across this video studying the interactions of autos, pedestrians and bicyclists. It doesn't make bicyclists look good.

On an earlier ride I was greeted by a man that proudly proclaimed that he rode 75 miles in the 'Miller Lite Ride for the Arts.' The Trek 100 has passed also. Both events I failed to mention. Also have to recognize a local for great achievements. But the 'Midwest MTB Festival' is this coming weekend. And the 'Ride the Divide' race is on. The promotion of the "Ride the Divide" film has been a big boost to the event. As of May they were expecting 100 participants. The problem is that it is an underground event, no permits (not sure if any are required) or sanctions by any organization. I have not been able to find the race event site where in the past you could follow the races progress. On the movie site all shipping for merchandise is free (code required) until the leader finishes the race. You can get the code from their facebook site. All things to put on your calenders for next year.

A big endurance race this weekend at John Muir. And don't forget the Subaru Cup is fast approaching. Not sure why I was thinking of attending the Subaru Cup, I have a big family event to attend on that date.

Yes, last night was the monthly mountain bikers meeting, for all of those who ride monthly... or not. The highlights being remarks that the John Muir Trails are in fantastic shape and mountain bikers love the technicality of the Emma Carlin Trails. And most importantly, orange is the new black. Or so Metro Mountain Bikers claim as they fawn over their new orange jerseys. Not sure how well that will go over in Architecture, where Architects claim relevance by garbing themselves in black.

I took this picture on a ride a couple days after the spring river clean up. Obviously the cleaning was not as thorough as it could have been. It goes to show what happens when you try to be something your not; this raccoon thinking himself a beaver. Just some of the lessons one can learn from nature, from riding a mountain bike. In my goal to put in 60 productive hours a week into work or exercise I have found a schedule useless. Schedules just disrupt the natural flow of activity. I have a list of things I want to do on a particular day and start with one item. If it fills the entire day... good. If not I move onto the next item. It is why I don't make it to the gym much. The time when I usually go, when my friends are there, just breaks up the day to the point where I cannot immerse myself into a project. Some of my blogs I include in the 60 hours, others I don't. I have been putting together a spreadsheet, cost estimates for repairing my roof. $2,500 in materials, well over $3,000 if I want to do it in a fashion that excludes a potential plunge to my death.

Facebook is the biggest waste of time. The Internet in general is growing cumbersome. far too over extended. I don't go to the mountain biking forums any more. I was in my e-mail the other day and it suddenly said my instant messenger has been disabled as I just signed into my account on another computer.

Is it Spring or Summer?

Yes, Memorial Day seems to be the natural turning point from Spring to Summer. We went five whole days after turning off the heater before putting in the air conditioner. New record highs in a mini heat wave made this following weather, now over 30 degrees lower than a few days ago, seem cool. Just a month earlier 60 degrees, and colder, would have seemed warm.

But I did get out for some good rides. Even in the extreme heat I got out some evenings. The pool is open at Hoyt Park and the trails ride well. My knee has been bothering me as I fell on it last month bowling. I am wondering if I have/had a hair line fracture the way it has been feeling. That and the inability to lose much weight have made me give up on the Subaru Cup. Money is an issue also. I will set my sights on local races; WORS races 6, 7, 10, and 12, possibly 9. And yes, the Wednesday Night time trials are going on with Metro Mountain Bikers. I should start attending. Also they have the Odd Tuesday Rides, all the information on their site.

Here was our Memorial Day meal. I need to find a proper diet to lose weight. I see many people claim protein diets work, though I can't get Misao to stop serving carbohydrate filled meals. Taking a break from our mundane life we went to the mall and walked around. The book store had a book from a guy who claimed it was insulin control that is the key to losing weight. It makes perfect sense to me. Too bad we can't afford his book. High protein and high fat, who can argue with that?

I haven't posted much recently but have plenty of pictures to make up for it. Alois passed his test, as he was studying English in California, and has promised many photos after he returns home and has time to post.

I made a carrying case for the back of my bike. Just gathered stuff hanging around the house, a couple dollars on hardware, miscellaneous tools and about an hour and a half of my time.

Three pieces of scrap plywood, roughly the same size and shape.

Clamp with nuts and bolts the base of the box, part of a commercial container system for transporting cut flowers, between two pieces of plywood.

The bottom piece needed to be cut to fit underneath the saddle stem mounted cargo rack. The drill provided the rounded end and then the jig saw finished the job.

Then I bolted everything together creating a snug fit to hold the box to the rack. Tightening any of the bolts too much thew off the alignment of the bolts on the three pieces of wood. I had to loosen everything and then tighten it again. It was a bit of a hassle to get the rack clamped to the saddle stem. The box was set far back enough that I didn't need to remove the saddle bag. It also doesn't interfere with me.

Misao took note of my creation and asked, "You're not going to go around on your bike picking up cans are you?" She said that would be embarrassing. And with one look, a single remark, my goals for world dominion have suffered another set back. It was also to be part of my weight loss plan and source of funding for new bike parts. I'm not sure if it is the act of recycling she finds embarrassing, or the fact that she dresses me so fashionably and my bike is so nice compared to the people usually collecting cans by bicycle around the city.

I also spent time in the most heated of heat this past week putting in the garden. A bit late, but we got everything in. Also planted some sunflowers where the raspberries grow. We only have one small raspberry plant. It will fill in the space over the years.

Here is a photo from the Memorial Day Parade. We rode our bikes to the Parade. There were lot of people out on their bikes. The new Canal Street corridor is very nice. Most people like to ride the broad sidewalks though some, as is legal, ride with the cars in the street. Many people took their bikes to the Parade but I was surprised how many people were riding away from downtown as the time for the Parade to start was quickly approaching. The photo is also a good opportunity to shamelessly promote my latest book, available only for Kindle. I took the photo for the cover myself. I haven't written much recently but feel a writing binge coming on.

Again I was down and out today. It was a long hard weekend with little sleep. Maybe I will take a morning ride tomorrow to look for Benie Brewer. His lawn ornaments have been hidden around the county parks, and state wide, for people to pillage. Prizes hidden inside supposedly. Didn't get much done today. Had to upload my book one more time, ...again. Finally got the format right and had to make some small corrections. That's it for the Kindle version. If I ever get it to print, with professional help, it might be quite different. Waiting for feedback from a former editor I gave a copy to.

Can I get in shape for the Subaru Cup. I have to try. I have to ride ride ride, get my weight down and start racing. My bike is riding smooth after I cleaned and lubed it. I thought the bottom bracket went out again as the bike was clicking. But I was wrong. The springs on the wheel quick release mechanisms were all messed up, caught in the mounts. I fimangled them with some small pliers to put them back in their place. Have to renew my license and WORBA membership. In other attempts to get in shape and stay healthy, I thought this man had great advice. Yes he is no longer here but he lived long and well.

Took a picture of this cardinal in the park a while back. We have rabbits and all kinds of birds in our yard. The Robins built a nest. The mourning doves enjoy our company also. Have to get the garden in. The seeds we have are old so I am just going to plant everything we have open, and choose the biggest and strongest from what comes up.

Hitting the Wall

Has it been over a month since I last posted? Apologies to my readers. Thank goodness I have Alois to cover for me, now happy in California studying English. Though his English was quite fine before. Of course he came across the pond with his bicycle. ...Not by bicycle, he brought it with him on the plane.

Metro Mountain Bikers had two movie nights at a local tavern this Winter and raised a bit of money. But they couldn't compare to what the premiere of "Riding the Divide" brought to the Rosebud. And it was such a great movie. Everyone should see it. If ever you rode a bicycle, you will want to start training again as soon as you see it. The movie has been so popular, this underground, unofficial, unsanctioned, totally self supported race of 2,700 miles has over 100 entrants this year. They are a bit anxious about the attention the numbers might draw. A group will start on the south end this year at the same time. The movie event was so successful they have decided to do another. A mountain bike movie marathon at a theater next off season. A series of movies run through two or three times for a single admission.

Has Easter come and gone since last I posted? It appears so. These Easter bunnies seem to have had greater success in their weight loss efforts. My weight has not changed. For Easter I received a free ticket to a Brewers game and joined a group from church. Great seats! It was a great game. We won. A hawk harassing the teams and spectators seemed to take the majority of news coverage on the game that day.

Though the weather has been unusually cold and a bit wet, there were many good riding days I didn't take advantage of. Shortly after I last posted I had a physical breakdown. Yes, I hit the wall. Something that happened quite more often before I got my CPAP machine for sleep apnea. Headaches, hard to open the eyes or do much of anything. I recovered after a few days, had a couple of great rides, then focused on finishing my next book. That, with the Mother's Day sales, kept me bit worn down.

And yes, the book is completed. Available for Kindle, it is not professionally edited. Excuse the Table of Contents, I just couldn't get the formatting for that part to work. I have no money to self publish a paperback. But I have a couple of odd jobs lined up and we are climbing out of our debt. If you enjoy a bit of saber rattling, a backhanded bromance, love a good man cry, think we should be giving the militaristic Chinese commies a bit of what for, then this book is for you. Only $1.48. You can download Kindle for your PC. Time to start riding again, a lot. My bike is in pieces waiting for a good cleaning. Today?... Then I need to buy tubes, break pads and maybe some new grips. And I could use a new front derailleur.

Aus der Neuen Welt

Schon seit einigen Jahren hatte ich den Wunsch, einmal die USA zu besuchen. Die Heimat dieses Blogs ist ja ebenfalls die USA. Diesen Wunsch konnte ich jetzt verwirklichen. Ich besuche jetzt einen mehrwöchigen Englisch-Sprachkurs, da mein Englisch noch nicht wirklich gut ist. Mein Reiseziel ist San Luis Obispo in Kalifornien.

Das beste Transportmittel für die Stadt ist natürlich ein Fahrrad. Das Fahrrad (siehe Bild) habe ich hier im CBO (Cambria Bicycle Outfitter http://www.cambriabike.com/) für 400 USD gekauft.

Es ist ideal für diesen Zweck. Der Bicycle Shop ist günstig und sehr empfehlenswert.

Es gibt hier sehr viele, gut markierte Fahrradwege. Die Stadt ist sehr Fahrradfreundlich strukturiert.

Eine große Entäuschung ist das Wetter. Ich habe hier viel Sonne und Wärme erwartet, aber bis jetzt war es ziemlich kalt (abends teilweise nur ca. 4 Grad Celsius) und tagsüber nicht mal 20 Grad Celsius. Außerdem weht ständig ein sehr starker und kalter Polar-Wind vom Pazifik ins Land. Geregnet hat es auch schon mehrmals.

Den Namen hat die Stadt vom Bischof Saint Louis von Toulouse (Frankreich). Dies war ein Grund, diese Stadt auszuwählen, da Louis die französische Form meines Vornamens ist. Das Bild zeigt die Statue von Vater Junipero Serra, der 1772 diese Mission gegründet hat.

Ich hoffe, das Wetter wird bald wärmer, damit ich mir die Fotos von den vielen Palmen nicht in meinem Zimmer anschauen muß.

The Robin, The State Bird

Spring is here finally. Though it has been tempting to get out for some long rides I spent some time starting back up on house repairs. I also got some work done in the yard. I was lubing my chain and filling my tires to go out for a ride when this tough guy came around. My presence unable to deter him from his desires, he began to feast from our lawn. Paying me no never mind. I even got up and came back with the camera. He thought it curious my pointing the little box at him. I never recall seeing the Robins with such powerful colors as this year; very black crown and vibrant breast. And I have never seen so many as I have this year.

Then I got out for a good ride. These are the first flowers I saw this year, along the river near the Hoyt trails. Have no idea what they are called. The trails at Hoyt were soft. The Kettle Moraine Trails are open, or so I heard at the monthly Metro Mountain Bike meeting tonight. This Saturday will be river clean up day. There will also be a Tea Party rally in Madison. The weight is moving down ever so slightly.

"Ride the Divide" is one focus expressed at the meeting. The location for its Milwaukee premier has changed; now at the Rosebud. We'll see if it doesn't change again. The race most attractive to myself, I have a list of links to big races in the sidebar, would be the MTB Challenge.

They are rebuilding the swimming pool at Hoyt Park. With temperatures reaching 80 the other day it is about time to turn off the furnace and turn on the air conditioner.

We went to the Bike Expo at the last minute. Misao reminded me Saturday that we were there last year taking a break from fretting many days over our dog in the hospital. A couple days later she died; poisoned. She was a very good dog. So Misao took the enthusiasm out of my sails, but we made it there Sunday evening. They sold a lot of bikes. Their best event ever I heard.

Someone commented on my last post, but I didn't confirm it. It was an anti-Amway plug with corresponding link. What put me off the most is that it appeared instantly as I posted. We all have our own horror stories about salesmen, no matter what they are selling. I just question the intentions and integrity of any who would obsess so against another. Those a kin to the spitter's guild. Stirring up in the hearts of men that they can do things to some that they would never consider doing to another (or allowing anyone else to do to another), like poisoning their dog.

Bad weather will return, ensuring that the first formal draft of my next book will be completed by Monday. If you read the brief excerpts I put, will put, on my writers blog you may form certain impressions about my next book. I can insure you they will all be wrong. I Give, and I Give, and I Give

Yes, as the bicycle season ramps up I must support the cause. Time for promoting the work and well being of others with no compensation for myself. First and foremost, we have the Wheel and Sprocket, the State's largest bicycle retailer, part owned by a cousin of a very good friend of mine, Bike Expo at State Fair Park this weekend. But some other great bicycle enthusiasts of Olympic fame will not let the event go unchallenged. Emery's is also having their big spring sale. With gas prices so high you might not want to drive all the way to the city, two great locations. Not to forget your local bike shops, I have to mention Ben's (even though they don't want me in their store) a great supporter of Metro Mountain Bikers and great lovers of cycling.

And to add a bit of color, pictures so important to a good blog, don't forget that Ray's MTB is still open.

I also received an e-mail some time back asking me to promote this bike website, Biking.com. I may add it to the sidebar, and no I received no compensation. And someone friended me through our you/tube page. Another entrepreneur looking to fulfill the American dream. See their video clip below. Yes an Amway, or Quixtar, or just Nutrilite promotion, whatever you want to call it, it is a catchy tune. I have to get me one of those T-shirts. I am no longer part of Amway, as I couldn't make any money. Though I really enjoy their XS line of energy drinks. I will have to find someone to buy them through.

Medical issues and meeting with a lawyer have kept me from getting to the gym. The weather has kept me from riding much. Not to mention trying to finish up my next book. The first draft is the story, the writing comes after that. Sometimes I editing a string of sentences I wrote and have to ask myself, is that English? Having written a book it makes me more self conscious of how I write on my blogs, making even that task take more time.

Election Day

It is hard to believe just two days ago we got this hail storm. Pea sized, some bigger, some smaller, all ice. Frozen orbs smacking little bits off the trees. The most unusual part of the storm was how much we got. Some claimed three inches where they lived. It felt funny in ones hands. To walk on it took more energy. Good thing it was above freezing or we would be plagued with black ice, the hail all crushed down into the pavement.

But today was a wonderfully beautiful day, sun shining bright. Election day when the silent majority will make a powerful statement to the liberals here and across the country. After voting this afternoon I was out in the yard in short sleeves, checking out the new growth and making some minor house repairs. But mostly I was writing, as I was yesterday. Taking a break now to write here.

Yes, I should be riding, it is so beautiful out, but I need to finish. I hope to have the book completed by tomorrow, and the last two chapters edited, gone through a couple times by myself, by the end of the week. I added a tiny bit to the preview on my writers blog but will add more over the weekend. An English gentleman, a man I knew briefly overseas, to whom I sent my first book enjoyed it and said I had talent. They say you will never get good feedback from anyone who knows you too well.

Not sure if I will publish as an e-book unless they can guarantee they wont be giving it away for free. No money to pay for a professional editor.

Between our two businesses, house repairs, exercise, and writing I hope to reach a goal of 60 hours a week to start with. Unless I can finally get another job.

April 1st

Here's is the last remaining remnant of snow in our yard. Like a vampire it hides from the sun. It would be nice to say there will be no more snow this Spring, but the weatherman predicted snow for today. I hope he was joking. I am not big on April fools jokes. But we all know here in Wisconsin that we can get some heavy snows even in April.

Out riding the last two days. It is good to ride. The trails at Hoyt are just a bit too wet yet to ride. That is why Ray's is open until May 1st. And since I have been promoting Ray's for free, Wisconsin in my visitor counter (it records by state) surpassed California in number of visitors. Yes, Wisconsin and California is where the vast majority of my visitors apparently live. My bike is in need of a good cleaning and tuning. And I need new tubes. Those Chinese tubes just don't last. Everything is made in China, except for the stuff that's made somewhere else.

And speaking of China, I've put a snippet of my next book on my writers blog. A very rough first draft. I had to rewrite the section as the computer I am using is incapable of connecting to the Internet and this computer does not have microsoft word. Over 2,000 words yesterday and nearly that today leaves me posting in the middle of the night. The preacher on the TV is singing that all that was lost, all that was taken away, all that has been stolen will be returned. Amen. It's now after 2 am.

Misao smiles when I say I'm going out riding and then I'll be writing. "Wridng and riting" she says, or something like that. She is focusing on my weight loss project now, which should be helpful as she plans the meals. I really need to put more effort into my photos. You can catch a glimpse of my next book here.

Air Mail

Misao is sending a relief package to her family in Japan. Her sister told her that they will have periods without electricity for many hours a day, and it will continue until Winter returns. Hopefully it will leave soon. So most important are these LED lights. The rechargeable should work well when the lights go out at night. We haven't tested any of them ourselves. Those little disposal waterproof lights look neat.

Misao wants to make an emergency kit. These next two years will have many more catastrophes of various types so we hear.

The gym is still crowded. Despite the cold, the bright sunshine has been inviting, but I didn't get out for a ride today. Maybe tomorrow. My weight is down a bit though. Started the strength training again.

I e-mailed Amazon's digital book / Kindle platform. Asking some questions about my book, it seems some other e-book seller (I didn't know I made my book available to other e-book sellers) was offering my book for free as a promotion, so they were offering it for free. Yes, it is clearly in the contract that they can do that. And while they are supposed to have numbers as to how many they gave away, that function hasn't been working. I cannot win for losing. No profits and they can't even let me know how popular it was. It's currently a mere one dollar and we could use the help. I am sure you will enjoy it. At least one of the dozens that my counters suggest come to the blog.

Belated anyway.The Supermoon having just recently passed, as has the first full day, and second full day, of Spring. Though I am not sure at what point the moon is no longer super. St. Patrick's Day is also over, but there is still plenty of March madness to go around. And no, unlike our President who should have more important things to worry about, I did not pick any brackets. Two Wisconsin teams are still in the running, YEAH!

We do not admire the St. Patrick's Day celebrations. The saint part of the day seems to be missing. Everyone drinks from morning to night ...why? They'll never get those brain cells back, or perhaps that's the problem. Of course the Spring Social Ride will be coming around soon. Nothing but another excuse to drink to excess, though it resembles more a sobriety meeting compared to St. Patrick's Day. We devoured some corned beef for our celebration.

We had a short spurt of nice weather and I got in some good rides. A lot of walking yesterday. But a wedding Saturday stalled my weight loss goals ever so briefly. I have come to see, out of all the reasons you read about as to why people gain weight, that lack of sleep is a major one for me. ...What time is it? Not only do I eat more when I'm tired, I don't even enjoy the food as much. It is not looking good for me making the Iola Bump and Jump.

The rhubarb is getting ready to burst to life. I treated the peach tree. The directions for the fungicide said to apply in the Autumn while the tree is dormant. So I treated it as soon as it was dry out, another requirement, and the temperatures approached the right range. It was actually a bit cooler than it should have been to apply the fungicide, but I decided to error on the side of temperature rather than the condition of dormancy.

Not much in the way of pictures recently. Alois has promised pictures and video from flying gliders this summer. We didn't get through even the first day of Spring before the weather went dark, cold, and wet. But the bad weather has gotten the book back on track. Moving to completion quickly as I stay indoors and we have gotten over the distress of the earthquake in Japan. New low price for your Kindle on my first book.

Japan

All of Misao's family in Japan are safe, as are friends and their families. It surely was shocking and horrifying to see those tsunami taking out fleeing cars. Misao has one social network friend that had much of her extended family living in one of the hardest hit cities. Dogs from all over the world will surely save many a life over the next week or so.

Here are the first signs of spring at our house. I planted a few kinds of bulbs, each kind to bloom some weeks after the other. The problem is the proximity to the neighbors house keeps the ground warmer than the weather would otherwise suggest. So I think everything will come in at once. Tulips, narcissus and something else. It seems it will only cost $20 to treat the peach tree. Misao said Lady Ga Ga gave $16 million to the Japanese relief effort (Misao read this and now has told me her source is questionable. Yes, I changed 60 to 16, a problem with pronunciation).

The gym still has some crowds. I thought it would have emptied out by now. People just hanging out talking, sitting or hanging on the equipment you want to use. Women hula hooping in the path to the machines you want to use. Just annoying sometimes. The women last longer than the men, but in another month it should be back down to the regulars... which are most predominantly men.

Actually haven't worked on the book since the Japanese quake. Threw off my entire focus. Will print and edit what I got and then finish the first draft.

Yes, in less than two months the greatest state wide mountain bike race series the world has ever known will have begun their 2011 season; WORS. Following only a few days after their trade mark Iola opening, Metro Mountain Bikers will be screening the movie "Ride the Divide" at the Times Cinema. And a week after that Metro Mountain Bikers will begin their weekly Wednesday Night Race. And don't forget that Ray's will be open until May 1st. Odd Tuesday ride beginning May 17th.

The Trek Top Fuel is again the featured bike of WORS this year. A new sponsor of WORS this year is Element Mobile. Plans look fairly typical to others. But if all the big name providers have given you the shaft over the years (like Verizon), and you don't want to give them your business anymore...

I have decided that Fat Tuesday, yesterday, will be the fattest day of my life. Yes, that five more pounds than the year before caught me, as I couldn't get to the gym as much as I would have liked this Winter. One reason is the day jobs I was catching, and then when the day jobs dried up, my writing. I certainly cannot race at my current weight. Can I lose a pound a day?

And speaking of Late Night Snacks that adorable late night star Jimmy Fallon, who we watch on occasion, has his own ice cream flavor; Late Night Snack. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, we have not been able to find it in Milwaukee. Certainly unfortunately the gentleman in question doesn't seem to understand the value of a dollar. He knows what I'm talking about. Not that I would want to start any controversy, or as they say in the United Kingdom, controversy.

Of course nothing says biking season is almost upon us like the Bike Expo, coming April 7-10. Emery's (they're hiring) also holds a very competitive sale on the same dates at their stores. It seems Specialized is gaining ground overseas.

Yes, the Nook Color seems to be challenging the Kindle. And you can even buy it on Amazon. These readers are great if you can do your social networking, and store your music on them. Keeping that stuff segregated from your PC proper, where security might be a bigger issue. I should expand my sales options for my first book so more e-stores can carry it. 15,000 words in the last four weeks. I should be into the final chapter of my next book by the beginning of next week. As I get it into the editing process I will put excerpts up on my writers blog.

Winter Blahs

I enjoy Winter but when we get temperatures in the 50's and it gets cold again it loses some of its attraction. Not to mention the warmer weather brought a thief around who cut off our catalytic converter. Sawed it right off as you can see in the picture. We got it fixed right away but it still makes strange sounds and have already taken it back to the mechanic once.

We didn't need that hit to our personal economy. And now it is cold again, and when we do get snow it is often an icy mess.. Makes it hard to get out and ride. My weight is shooting up much to my dismay. But all is not lost. Light has come to the darkness. Victory has been snatched from defeat. I have declared ice cream a vegetable.

The book is moving along well, thanks to poor weather, but taking longer than I expected. Writing not very conducive to weight loss however. Walking has taken precedent over riding. Just haven't had much opportunity to get to the gym. And can't afford to go to Ray's, though I have to go at least once before long.

Errands Galore

Yesterday was a day for a slew of errands. All by bicycle, the weather providing very comfortable conditions, at least for the first two hours. It must have been my longest ride so far this year. My exercise journal is growing denser as I work in more exercise. Then I was charged with roasting a sirloin tip roast, which didn't go well.

I need new tubes. I have more problems with failing valves on my tubes than flats. All the tubes made in China these days. I have to pump up my front tire every time I go out and fear the valve will completely fail at the apogee of my ride. Metro Mountain Bikers, speaking of deflated tubes, is having a movie night this Sunday. A fundraiser, bring your own meat.

Despite the even more attractive weather today I didn't get in any exercise. And I haven't checked my weight for a while. Today was a bummer for some reason. I need more socializing to keep myself motivated. I also failed to take my camera on my last ride so I only have this picture of my favorite rabbit.

My trips to the gym have been sparse also. But I did get back to the book tonight after not writing at all yesterday. 1,000 words a day for a few days when we were under the deep freeze. Then our busy weekend cut into my writing time. Not only the business but some things were going on at SARUP that I checked out. And my book writing cuts into my blogging time. I have pieces for several of my blogs I want to get to, but haven't been able to focus.

The snow is disappearing quickly as the freeze turned to a great thaw and a recent large solar flare will soon speed things along. Great for riding. I have to treat the peach tree before any leaves sprout. Two more weeks of Winter but time starts flying with Spring and all the work it entails. Can't let the peach tree slip my mind.

A Winter Ride

Got out for a good ride though I dislike the salty streets with their corrosive attributes. The 19 degrees, -7 to those opposed to the American way, was quite comfortable with no wind. But this isn't Boulder Colorado, None of our bike trails are plowed as you can see. Very few would use them if they were. Perhaps a ski club with a grooming machine could groom the trails for cross country skiers. In fact bicycle organizations, snow mobile clubs and others do a lot tax dollar free to promote their activities.

I saw these deer as I was passing through and checking out the bike trail. Not very fearful of my presence. The Veterans Administration grounds have very clean streets and sidewalks for winter bike riding. It made my trip to the bank easier, and definatly safer, but longer. And safety is a growing issue.

I have set out to get at least 1,000 words a day on my next book. Hopefully by the end of the month the first draft will be completed and I will focus on another book I have started. It is not too difficult to complete 1,000 words if I don't get caught in proof reading or research. Bitter cold is here for several days. Should have me making a lot of headway.

And yes, I claim some success in my Super Bowl predictions. If the Packers had not uncharacteristically dropped so many good passes I would have been correct. Someone on the radio asked which Super Bowl was greater, more significant to Packer fans; this one or the one in 1996? I say 96. I was surprised so many said this one was the greatest. In the Bradshaw days I was a Steelers fan for those Super Bowls. Why? Because then, no one ever dared dream we would even get to a Super Bowl again. And then suddenly we were there, and we won. After over a decade of Favre and then Rodgers' great performance we have spent over a decade asking, why haven't we won another Super Bowl? I think people forget what it was like.

Have to get to the gym. Was going to go after the Bank and had my gear with me, but I forgot my bicycle lock. Would like to make significant progress in my weight loss by the end of the month also.

Super Bowl XLV

The rabbits have left their sign. Tracks criss crossing the yard. And in this year of the rabbit who shall fortune shine down upon. I say the Green Bay Packers.

Yes the big game starts tomorrow and I think this hole the rabbits appear to have made to escape the big snow will make a good hole for the Pittsburgh Steelers to crawl into when all is said and done.

Most are predicting a close game. I say Packers 35-17. Pittsburgh does not have its starting center. This means a greater turnover potential and false start penalty likelihood.

The Packers will play excellent in the indoor field and the Steelers let themselves slip in the last two quarters of the last game. That in itself should scream a blow out against the Steelers. Its all mental.

And then there were the remarks about hitting with one's helmet. The Steelers claiming they will pay their fellow players fines. Yes Steelers, get the officials against you. In that all important turnover battle look for the Steelers to have to give one back because of a penalty on the play. And for an ejection for a helmet strike. And if their coach protests...

The weaknesses for the Packers? The play calling in any scripted situation; a game opening drive, a four minute or two minute drill everyone knows what Coach McCarthy is going to call. In the opening play of the playoff game against the Falcons I spoke to the TV, "Don't give it to Starks. Don't give it to Starks. Don't give it to Starks." They gave it to Starks and as soon as the ball was in his hands four falcons were on top of him. And with the lead under four minutes just run ,run, run, punt. And make sure you try to run around the end so the runner gets pushed out of bounds and stops the clock. It's first downs that keep the clock moving.

This is why the Madden game system has the Steelers squeezing out a victory in the final moments. But it will be over by half time.

Just my view but I have confidence in my read as I am greater than most in everything I do except where others are greater than me. We will be watching at home.

Year of the Rabbit

Rabbits like to eat tulip flowers. At least in my mom's garden. They wont be getting to my potted tulips for a while. What pot you ask? exactly. I doubt we will be seeing the rabbits any time soon. And what does it mean for ground hog day if the ground hog can't get out of his hole?

Pure as the wind driven snow they say. Twenty four inches of snow after three rounds. Actual thunder snow Tuesday night. And where did the dogless house and bath of the birds go?

I had some worries for my heart recently as I was light headed and having the tendency to almost black out at times for many a day. Called the doctors office and talked to a nurse who thought it was some kind of virus. Didn't make an appointment as they charged me $450 just to see the doctor last time. And that was with the self pay discount at Columbia St. Mary's. After shoveling and digging out the car I have to agree with her assessment as I am still alive.

Maybe I will put my after storm shots up on Flickr. I still have to check if I have all my MTB shots up.

My weight is still to high but more controllable this Winter. Misao has cut the portions she serves... at times and we generally eat earlier in the evening now which I think helps. I really have to get back into my gym routine. I found if I spend long time periods walking and doing the stationary bike when I work out, having some Gatorade, rather than just water, is beneficial as I have fewer cravings when I get home.

Yes, it is the year of the rabbit. Seeing we have become very friendly to our back yard rabbits I hope it will be a good year for us. They say it is a year of good fortune. We could use it. But maybe that is only for Chinese. We'll see what happens. I doubt it will stop the rabbits from waiting for us at the back door to get a pile of oats. I worry what happens when we run out of oats... not that I would fear a rabbit... but there are four.

A Walk in The Snow

Round two of the big snow left us with over four inches overnight. Misao's footprints in the snow as she took the car this morning. The big storm, round three, set to arrive within the hour and not stopping until noon tomorrow. Looking at sixteen more inches at least.

OH JOY! I say.

I took a journey myself through the cold wind driven snow of round one yesterday, taking a walk to the bank. It was a worthwhile walk as I haven't made it to the gym much in January. And while we hear plenty about the more snow we are going to get I found nothing in our local paper's website about the grand opening of Ray's MTB (good video coverage with this article). The last article the local paper wrote was that its opening was delayed. Could there be an anti mountain bike conspiracy? Milwaukee isn't warm to new comers certainly. Anyone, not local old money, looking to invest has an uphill climb.

I didn't attend the grand opening. Was feeling under the weather the last week or so and a bit busy. Not to mention the admission is a hindrance for us in our current financial circumstance. But I am sure all mountain bikers have only the highest hopes for Ray's in Milwaukee.

The tulips are buried.

The birds have no bath.

The house has no dog.

Sounds like a poem in there somewhere. I have neglected my writing with the holidays, catching a string of odd jobs and being discouraged by poor sales of my first book. Now I am focusing more on my next stories. Need to spend a good chunck of time each day to write. Have to do a bit of e-bay-ing also. Will be enjoying weathering out this storm.

BIG EVENTS!

Yes, the Packers and Bears play tomorrow. The longest rivalry in all of professional football. We can't stand Bears fans and they can't stand us, outside of previous long standing relationships. We are going to a friends and will be cheering and snacking and hopefully not lamenting all afternoon.

But there are plenty of other big events. Earthquakes, floods in Brazil and Australia among a few of the things that remind us how lucky we are. And what about that Australian Open? Competitors rackets falling apart in play and dead spots on the court where the ball wont bounce. A World level event with the most prominent manufacturers supplying the gear and what a poor showing. Surely a sign of the decline of civilization itself. And of course everyone knows the Bears have a notoriously poor playing field.

The biggest event of all, at least in Milwaukee, will be the Grand Opening of Ray's MTB. The place to be January 29th and/or 30th. Along with the Great Lakes Multi Sport Expo also on the same weekend. On completely opposite ends of the city. Ouch!

Then there is the Chicago Poker Classic only a month away. I have a very good chance to qualify for a single table tournament through a poker league I occasionally attend. The winner of that, the best out of eight, gets his entry to the Chicago Poker Classic paid for.

The 17th

Yes, already 17 days gone in 2011. The twelve days of Christmas have long passed and the Christmas decorations are well down. We took them down on Elvis' birthday. No disrespect to the King intended.

Is it unusual that it is only after the days begin to grow longer that we feel the heavy burden of Winter? The coldest days are now coming. But even in the deepest, darkest, most frigid of Winters there is hope. That shining city on the hill. The path to the fulfillment of one's deepest desire stretched out before you. The hope of all men within ones very grasp.

Yes, ...

Rays is open.

The latest monthly meeting of the Metro Mountain Bikers (most probably soon to be part of IMBA) was held at Ray's. Because of their late opening a season pass is a mere $200. Open until May1st. Otherwise it is $19 for a day pass. $12 on BMX night, Sundays. And the BMX'ers are not where MTB'ers would enjoy riding. Bike rentals are $10 for the day or bring your own. Two levels of riding pleasure, the pump track still to be completed.

For those coming from out of town there is a Comfort Suites at the nearest expressway exit. A couple restaurants there and more including fast food two mile east on your way to Rays. At those food stops you turn north for a couple more miles and you've found your Winter Mountain Bike Haven.

What struck me about Ray's was all the seating. Lots of picnic tables. People ordered out pizza and others brought there own drinks. Some sofas and a TV showing mountain bike films over a fake fireplace. They have vending machines also.

Looking at my exercise log and then my scale, I found no surprises. I have done little yet this year and it shows. That will soon change. But a great start for the blog. Me providing that insightful insightliness only I can provide, lightening the hearts of my readers with my rapier wit, and promoting the work and welfare of others seeking and never receiving any reward or similar consideration in kind.

Happy New Year to all. Here is an Alterra cow bell. A free gift from their Coffee Bean Classic this summer that I neglected to mention until now. Obviously a great noise maker for a night such as tonight,... but what does it say about what they think of their team members?

It seems my political/human rights blog, under a different profile, has a bit of a following. Not having posted for over a month 38 visitors hit that blog in short order after a recent post. Only 2 new visitors among them.

Yesterday we still had snow covering the ground. This morning everything was green. Yes, a few days of warm temperatures may be considered an ideal time to ride. For me it was an ideal time to work on the back wall of my home and get it covered back up before the cold comes back tonight. Still work to be done as soon as I finish this post. But why do we need warm weather in Winter to ride when Ray's is open?

I have not been to the gym much either. Gained three or four pounds since Christmas. Turning me from the toned fit individual described as someone who wears his weight well, into a jelly belly.

I'll be writing and carrying with me my drafting tools, as we work tonight, to usher in the new year, setting the tone. And I'll start the New Year with a ride tomorrow, no matter the weather.

Peace on Earth Goodwill Towards Men. Hope every one's Christmas is wonderful.

Called my brother and his family with holiday greetings tonight as tomorrow they travel. More calls to make on Christmas. Now we are watching "It's a Wonderful Life." Then I have to make my rice pudding before going to sleep. We have a perfect location for a nativity display but not in our budget.

Had my cpap machine pressure raised finally and it looks like I'll be sleeping deeply. Unable to stir when Santa comes a calling. Something I should have had done a year ago. Maybe one of the reasons I was feeling off this last mountain bike season.

The snowman has changed his headgear. A bit sensitive about his height. Guarding the last of the gifts to go out. His job will be done when we leave for a Christmas party we've been invited to tomorrow. Looking forward to any Christmas tidings Alois may want to share.

Not sure where all the gifts came from. They just showed up over the course of the week as if by magic. We're waiting til morning to open them, ...except for the one's Misao opened already. She couldn't wait.

And what did I get for Misao? Was it something she'll never expect that caught my eye thinking she'll love it? Or a new purse she was asking for and then said, "no," she didn't want one? Or that new remote she said she wanted that would be used mostly by me?

We saw a commercial for "The Biggest Loser" and Misao wondered "How do they get like that?" I said; "Do you want me to show you?" Cookies, cakes, ice cream, and other sweets and snacks to fatten us up for the long Winter fill the house.

The gym is calling.

Oh'by gosh by golly, baby it's cold outside and for those dreaming of a white Christmas I say let it snow let it snow and snow as a front is coming in this evening. At this time when a weary world rejoices the only thing missing is a Lady Ga Ga Christmas album. And speaking of entertainment my book is now only $2.99 for Kindle users. More exciting than a ride on a one horse open sleigh.

The computer is back but acting strangely. That, getting the tree up and decorated, a string of day jobs, and for the last several days getting out the gifts and Christmas cards have just given me a breather today. The snowman, sporting a cap from his favorite arms dealer, sat guard until we could get all the gifts shipped out. I started putting up some outdoor lights tonight.

Asked by the electricians I help out once in a while, if I preferred digging trenches or working in attics, rolling around in loose fiberglass insulation, I was told they had a trench for me to dig in an attic.... So what was the point of the question?

And some people say I don't want to work... though we have two small businesses to boot.

Then... a few mishaps, including that computer crash, sucked up all the money I made almost to the dollar. If you look in a dictionary of phrases you'll find my picture next to 'can't win for losing.'

Haven't been to the gym much. I got out for my first Winter ride this afternoon running some errands. Though Winter is not really for two more days. The Post Office, with four priority mail packages, and some other tasks for over ten miles and nearly two hours of riding. The streets are still good to ride but... more snow is coming. My new beanie kept me toasty warm.

Ray's is still not open. At least according to their website. I missed the monthly MTB club meeting so am not sure what the latest on the opening is. There is a rumor as to why they switched their meetings to Monday, but fortunately I don't listen to rumors.

After the holidays I hope to spend many hours at the gym every week, if not every day I can get there. Catch up with some reading, do some writing and get my renovation and new home designs worked out and down on paper. My computer is just too old for my CAD program to work with sufficient speed to keep me from frustration. I like producing hand drawings. I was looking over my old sketch books. I'm truly out of practice.

Christmas is filling the air but losing weight is still on my mind. I was thinking of a liquid diet. Chocolate milk, orange juice, egg nog, maybe some Gatorade, and plenty of water along with a slew of assorted desserts and I should be dropping weight like crazy.

We were watching a Scandinavian cooking show. They were in a little town known to be Santa's hometown. The traditional dessert for Christmas there being rice pudding. Rice simply cooked in milk (I bet whole milk) and when spooned out, topped with sugar, cinnamon, and a clump of butter.

Happy Thanksgiving to all who may be reading whether here or anywhere. Safe travels and don't drink too much. We will be working much of the long weekend. No invitations so we will most likely be staying at home tomorrow. Hope to catch the parade and the dog show on TV from whenever we decide to roll out of bed. If you like dog stories... have I ever mentioned I wrote a book?

I went to the gym and it soon started blizzarding. The snow was flying in furious fashion. But it just melted and didn't stay long. Just the right time for snow to come. And the passing of Thanksgiving is a perfect entry into the Christmas season. Didn't stay at the gym long. Haven't been feeling well this last week.

I made rice pudding this evening and we have a turkey, just for the adventure of cooking it tomorrow. It is like cooking three weeks of meals if you do Thanksgiving right. Might go out Thanksgiving evening. Hope to see my brother Friday who is driving up from Indianapolis with his family.

Saturday may be a good day to put up the outdoor Christmas decorations. Or starting a couple of odd jobs I got some tips on this morning. Got everything off the roof today and after I replace the back door I'll have to go back to writing some more books. Haven't sat down for over a month but the stories keep growing in my mind. Have I ever mentioned I wrote a book? Note Image and Link to the left. Yes November sales have been much better than the October sales of three books. I hope to get back my investment eventually. If I have a future book that sells, all my books should take off. A long shot, but we always stay hopeful. The reality is we will most likely lose the land where we buried our dogs through bankruptcy. One of the two or three reasons we have been trying to fight off bankruptcy. The stories in my book are fiction but the places are built out of reality. Both the pictures, on the front and back of my book, are from our property.

Sunday is a huge game for the Packers. A great way to spend the afternoon. If they can win that game in Atlanta they will be in good shape. Still it may all come down to the final game of the season against the Chicago Bears. If you like bears you may enjoy the book I wrote, not to give too much away.

Hunting

The rabbits are back. Eating the food Misao puts out every night. And many in Wisconsin spent this day in the cold wilderness not in pursuit of rabbits but deer. I haven't had the money to hunt for many years now. I miss the cold that just gets colder as you venture out well before sunrise to set up in a stand or blind.

This Saturday I finished recovering from those two days of digging up hard clay soil. Felt like I was coming down with a cold and wiped out the last two days. Exercise keeps one regular. And strenuous labor all the better. After two rigorous days, not even eating much and cleaning out my guts, I thought surely I would have lost some weight.... Not even half a pound.

Slept eight hours last night. According to my cpap machine I averaged 6.4 hours of sleep a night over the last seven years. More medical bills and then they want to charge me to reset my machine to a higher setting per the doctors prescription.

Last Saturday we went to breakfast with my parents. Saw their new condo. They will be in Florida for Christmas. The last time we were in Florida was Misao's birthday in 1998 when our flight to Brazil had to make an emergency landing. They said they forgot to fuel the plane. Everyone got out and received a nice meal but us. They wouldn't bring our order, took our silverware, and then three guys showed up in front of me to say "That isn't the guy." We ended up very hungry and missing our connecting flight.

I feel sorry for 'the guy.' 'The guy' being the eternal nemesis of 'the man.' I prefer to be 'a man' plain and simply. Just like everyone else except where I excel far beyond the other and they beyond me.

Ray's is behind schedule but will be opening soon. I'll have to go at least once this Winter. A season pass would make a nice Christmas gift. But we still have clear streets (and trails) and if you know how to dress plenty of opportunity to ride. Metro will be having their Turkey Hurl ride I imagine, though they haven't posted anything on the site. Those lights the Metro Mountain Bikers got a deal with seem to be defective. That's the rumor anyway. As of yet we have no plans for the Thanksgiving Holiday.

Bridges

Monday was a day of errands by bicycle. The days are short and it is best to get all the riding in before 4 pm. After my errands I took a tour of the new Hank Aaron trail extension. To the left is a shot West from the 70th street bridge. A two short block run down a side street gets one onto the trail. A trail that runs parallel to a quiet neighborhood street until one gets to Hawley. In fact another biker was riding alongside on the side street. But I guess we need a trail. Above is the eastbound approach to the new bridge at Hawley. Below a closer shot.

East of the new bridge the trail was quite crowded with walkers, dog walkers, and some other bicyclists. Then passing through the Veteran's Administration grounds we come to a tiny bridge. So short they made it out of wood. Pictured below. Great for those who like to burn their bridges.

Keeping east you come to the bridge that was covered in granite stone, and a run well past the stadium so you would have to double back if that is where you are headed. Then you come to a crossroads. Or a crosstrails.

You can go South.

You can keep going East, maybe.

You can head back from whence you came.

Or you can go North.

Access to the trails from the south is a nice little space if you don't mind the risk of a mugging. No riding since Monday and no gym as I have been doing some odd jobs. Hopefully will have more work tomorrow. Keeping hydrated and a good energy drink make a big difference when your digging trenches all day. I think the electrician would have wanted it done quicker but he wasn't complaining as I do a good job.

Autumn

I finally raked the leaves into the street. Why rake before all the leaves have fallen? At least on my side of the road. Getting the outdoor work done before Winter cuts into my riding time. A couple of good rides and lots of ladder climbing. The roof may need a bit more patching. We'll see after it rains again. The chimney is somewhat hazardous to work on without buying more roofing brackets which are expensive. But I did enough of the tuck pointing that I'm fairly certain that the chimney will not collapse.

The book sales are actually growing (you can find a discount code in previous posts), but it will be a long while before I see that money. I'll have to try to stir up more e-bay and other Internet income for some holiday money.

Nothing seems to change all at once. Some trees have green leaves, others none, and still others are full of color. I take my camera when I ride hoping to get some nice shots but most of these shots are from home. The Japanese barberry is always fiery red every Autumn. The garden has been finished for a week. I still need to treat the peach tree. Will have to call the nursery where we bought it for the proper stuff to use.

Buddha embraces his fatness. I think I'll confront my fatness by hitting the gym more. Maybe today. Tomorrow I will be in Waterford as I qualified for a big poker tournament. It is a long drive but not quite as far as Kenosha, where I thought the tournament was. Then I will be driving for work in the evening. That's a lot of sitting. Maybe Buddha is right.

New Days Coming

The Hank Aaron bicycle or multipurpose trail across Hawley is now in place. Not sure when it will be done, but they promised this year. And we saw a lot of leaf pickups these weeks before the election though most of the leaves were still on the trees. I guess we were supposed to think the mayor was doing a good job, though we never saw that much city hardware when there wasn't an election.

I stepped away from the election fervor after I voted and visited all the dogs at the humane society, our polling place, and took a nice long ride. The Hoyt Trail is good and then I went to check on the bridge. Leaving the trails I caught these ducks enjoying something tasty to fatten up on before Winter. Possible snow tomorrow and then it looks like Indian Summer next week with temperatures in the 60's. Still some good riding weather ahead.

In the evening I followed the election results. Watched the BBC coverage. A bit too excited and clunky but more enjoyable than the liberal propagandists on our mainstream media. Even Misao, not a native speaker, could tell from their remarks that the various media big shots were democrats. And then there was the Geritol junkies on PBS that seemed about two hours behind in calling the races.

My weight is going down but I skipped the gym to open up the ceiling where the leak persists. It is good to see that the roof framing is in good shape. Have to prioritize the roof work and look long term to painting the entrance canopy.

Feeling hopeful on my weight loss goals and the future in general. Feeling prosperous and won my first poker tournament on Halloween. Misao always gives me job postings for teaching English in Korea. Have to improve our income somehow. The book sales will not be evident for some time as I was told some sales channels I will not receive a report from for 30-60 days. Inferring that I actually have sales through those channels like bookstores and other Internet retailers.

Happy Halloween. With plenty of wild animals wandering around our urban environments it is surely scary. But don't worry, the DNR has told us all that a pack of twelve coyotes spotted near downtown would never attack anything bigger than themselves and that they only eat rodents. And after claiming for years we have no mountain lions in Wisconsin the claims are now that our cougar population is on the rise as cattle and horses are being attacked.

Election day is coming... BOOOO!

But what is truly scary is the London 2012 Olympic mountain bike course where switchbacks are referred to as zig-zags and almost no pure single track exists throughout the whole course. Nothing is more underrated, demanding, and fulfilling as running a tight series of switchbacks on a climb or descent. But the true horror... the majority of the mountain bike course will be artificially surfaced.

Since Easter we have been certain that the chocolate bunny was up to no good. Teaming up with the jack-o-lantern we were certain we had met our match. But coming home it appears they had a falling out, or perhaps a difference in tastes would be a better word.

And the next morning...

We often listen to Lady Ga-Ga in the car on the weekends when we are working. We like some of her music but cannot stand her music videos. I'm certain if I watched too long my head would start spinning around. We took out her CD and put in some more uplifting music and the machine kept spitting out the new CD. Then all the radio/CD controls on the steering wheel stopped working. I tried and tried but the CD kept popping out working the controls manually over and over. Finally we put the Lady Ga-Ga CD in and everything went back to normal. Scary? True story? Yes. But it happened some four weeks ago.

The holly, an evergreen, is starting to fill in the corner after some two years. We have been promised rain many more times than we actually received rain and hollies will appreciate filling up with water before the ground freezes. The buttercups are dead. They spread quickly and grow thick but always need watering to look attractive. Those tiny roses were a gift I threw in the ground and never expected much from. They sure bloom nice and strong. That wind storm was the second largest storm in recorded history. If it were a time of year for rain or snow we would have been in big trouble. Much of our roof was scattered across our lawn as many old shingles were ripped off. Cold and barren has hit just in time for the holiday.

The economy is tough, but some odd jobs will get us by some medical bills I have this month. My hands, wrists, and elbows are just recovering from digging trenches in hard clay soil. Not to conceal any evidence of nefarious activity or hide some evil talisman but to confine currents of an electrical nature. The work kept me from the gym this week because of time and aching muscles.

It used to be that the whole month of October was filled with Halloween type parties. But over the past two years we have found that the vast majority of people coming out in costume for parties has been confined to a single weekend. And the majority of that activity to a single weekend evening closest to the date.

Wild Things

Here is one of the photos from the Wigwam MTB Challenge I haven't uploaded to flickr yet. Have to get that done. Got out for a good ride before some rough weather moves in. Combined the ride with errands. On my way back I ran across this coyote on the path. Couldn't get my camera out quick enough and had to wait and move around to get a good shot.

The days are getting shorter and the weather more harsh. Soon it will be the time of year when most spend a lot more time indoors. But now many are spending more time outdoors as they have to care for their yards and gardens before Winter comes. Went up on the roof to temporarily take down my scaffolding as we are expecting extreme winds for the next two days.

Misao was recently marveling at the comfortable lifestyle the rabbits had been living in our back yard. She keeps putting food out for them. But they have become scarce, either out of an intelligent awareness of their surroundings... or not. I caught a shot of this ring tailed hawk near our home. He was well posed right in front of our house but again I couldn't get the camera out in time. He flew off to some higher more secluded branches.

Getting to the gym a bit more but it will be a while before I go regular. Hope to buy a trainer this Winter though the finances haven't improved much. I skipped the Metro Mountain Bikers most recent exercise in public drunkeness; the Fall Social Ride. More doctor visits and an adjustment in my cpap machine based on some test results may bring an improvement in my sleep. Not sure if I will paint the entrance canopy this year as the weather could go bad quickly. After sanding it was recommended that I treat the old gray wood with a mixture of turpentine and linseed oil. It will rejuvenate the wood and make for a strong bond with an oil based primer. Otherwise the paint will just peel away in short order.

Wigwam MTB Challenge

Yes, I made the Wigwam MTB Challenge. The weather could not have been better and word was WORS had ordered up the roots extra bumpy this year. Many, but not all the photos are up already on our flickr page. It will be a while before I sort through the video. I took quite a bit and would put up a choice clip but I cannot get blogger to upload any video from my computer. Not sure what the problem is. I did get one clip up on you/tube and posted on the Metro Mountain Bikers Ning site. It seems popular.

We had to get four new tires. An expense that put us back again but will give a feeling of safety as Winter driving is just around the corner. A big holiday weekend means we will be busy with our business. Then Sunday we will celebrate Misao's birthday. Sushi has been declared the only dining option and I'm not sure if we will go to a movie. "Hereafter" and "Secretariat" top the list if we decide to splurge.

I would like to be spending more time writing but have work to do on the house. I highly recommend if you are removing old paint from wood you use a heat gun. Scraping paint off the entrance canopy on our home has been transformed from an unending hellish torment to a path towards proud accomplishment as I can now see how the job will reach completion in short order before it gets too cold to paint. Thanks to a buddy from the gym for lending me his.

I was about to dump the pots into the compost bin when I noticed the peppers have produced a second crop. A few new peppers and many little flowers suddenly appearing. We didn't give much attention to our potted tomatoes because they didn't taste good but the bush in the small garden proper is still full of tomatoes.

The days are getting shorter. I need to get out much more on my bike in these final days of autumn. Hopefully finding scenes to take pictures of, capturing the beauty of the season. This last weekend the bicycle movers and shakers in Kenosha were, many in costume, riding in large hordes from bar to bar. I have to remember to take my camera with me on these October nights as many strange sights will manifest until All Saints Day.

Looking at the video of the Wigwam MTB Challenge in Sheboygan (not a suburb of Kohler) sure makes me inspired to race. However we have decided I will only be taking pictures, not participationing. The Alterra pictures are up on my flickr page. The riding is taking second place to home repairs as is going to the gym. The gym will be a Winter endeavor as October weather is very beautiful. Hopefully we will see wonderful colors when we drive up the 55 miles for WORS' final event of the season. When the days become too cold I will be focusing on weight loss with the gym taking second in fitness priorities, as it seems the more I exercise the more I eat.

I took the car in for an oil change last week, taking with me "Modern Bird Hunting" to read while I waited. Then afterwards riding the trails along the Menomonee River I came across these ducks. The trails were clear and in good condition as far as I saw. It was a good ride and I need to get out for many more. And again last week, yes last week, I took this photo of the spider that has set its traps under our front porch. Currently we are scraping paint and looking to paint the front porch.

October is one of the best months of the year and Misao's birthday. She demands Sushi. I don't know if there will be any good movies that weekend. A chance to splurge a tiny bit. I asked if she wanted this shirt for her birthday and she said, "No way!" But I did buy myself a beinie to keep my head warm while riding in the Winter. Didn't test how it will fit under my helmet.

The book sales are there. Friends have stepped up to buy and promote from literally all across the country and world. But not too many sales so I have a good idea of who has bought and who hasn't. All sales through Amazon United States. I guess Amazon US is accessible from most anywhere. It is also available in the U.K.. People have told me I must be a good writer because my book made them cry. I hope they are not letting people read the whole thing with the 'look inside' feature on Amazon. We could sure use the sales. I know there are a lot of you out there that haven't bought yet.

Up On the Roof

Just two more days for Emery's September clearance sale. Prices now near 50% off on specially marked items. The final WORS race is just around the corner and we are planning to attend, me in participation. Though I wont have the money for the new roof where it needs to be newed. So I was up on the roof.

I decided to put a more substantial patch over the area I previously patched. One that could hold through the Winter. First you need the materials.

This is what it looked like and I had to consider it was not the patch that was failing as a bit of leak still remains.

There is a reason they call it roofing 'cement.' I could have used more as you do not want to leave any air pockets under any roofing.

Then I had to go down and get some nails and a hammer as the cement was not going to hold the piece of paneling down. And then covered it in roofing cement.

Cover with tar paper and cover that with more roofing cement. There was just enough cement left to cover some other areas that looked like trouble.

A few more patches, tuck pointing the chimney and no more going onto the roof until the Winter is over and I have the money to put a new one on. Not just a roof but some structure. Have to paint the front porch. The compost bin needs turning, coffee grounds added, and then all the pots are going to be dumped on top. And when the leaves are gone I need to treat the peach tree.

This is over a week old but I did get out on a good ride to take some pictures of an architectural nature. This the bike overpass at Hawley for the Hank Aaron State Trail. Looking to get some good long rides in this week. The Hoyt Park Trail has been fully open for some time now and the Crystal Ridge Wednesday Night Race/Time Trials will continue indefinitely it appears. An advantage of the time trial format if you got the lights for the job.

Autumn

Happy Autumn to all. Autumn is the best time of year filled with plenty and comfort. The weather could never be better. But it is because we suffer the Winters and Summers that it is so enjoyable. Those living in eternal Summer or eternal Winter must be bored by their climate. They most likely desire to visit somewhere of opposite clime to find relief and a joyous experience. Like Autumn without the travel.

My book is available on Kindle. I haven't backed up my blogs for some time but did so today. The peaches are all gleaned from the tree. The cucumbers are putting out their last effort. Looks like the tomatoes may keep going for a while. Now I must take care of the lawn and hopefully will have time for a ride this evening. Or should I go to the gym? Or both? Monday I rode to UW Milwaukee to catch another lecture. The guest lecturer the author of the featured book.

It appears that the Wednesday Night Race/Time Trials will continue indefinitely for those who have lights. Good strong LED lights required. I am actually losing weight. That exercise program that Misao has been doing off the Internet is not 'corism' the car, but 'core rhythms.' She had to spell it out for me.

I should be using my days better and posting in the evenings but that is when Misao claims the computer.

Struggles

Peach Cobbler

Today is Tuesday, primary election day. Soon the results will start coming in. Tuesday is also a blog title that I have used too often. I thought of titling today's post Monday, as the Metro Mountain Bike meetings have switched from Tuesday to Monday. What's that about?

I dropped off some peaches at my parent's house and a friends house today. Misao made peach cobbler tonight. I'm waiting for it to cool before adding ice cream. I finished up closing off one leak in the roof yesterday, long enough before the rain so the roof cement sets. As it will rain a lot Thursday I will check for leaks in the attic then. I may get all the peaches off the tree before then. I was stung by a wasp/yellow jacket grabbing a peach off the tree yesterday. They like the sugar as our peaches are very sweet. Fortunately I got my ring off before my finger swelled too much. I will have to get in a good long ride tomorrow before the rain comes in the evening.

I went to the Tea Party Saturday. And everyone in Wisconsin knows the Packers won Sunday. Ray's, that world famous venue of interior cycling of the wide tire variety, will open November 13th. The local WEMS race has been canceled. The Fall Color Festival, described as the biggest and longest running mountain bike trail advocacy fundraising event, will be on the 25th. The infamous Chequamagon (you're not pronouncing it right ...trust me) Fat Tire Festival will be the 18th and 19th. Tomorrow is the final Wednesday Night Race/Time Trial and will be a night race requiring lights, good bright LED lights. The powers to be are asking for feedback on the WORBA site design. My book is in the mail and, if I approve it, will be available within days.

Football Trumps Mountain Bike

Today is a day to remember and think about what it means to be a human being with all its corresponding responsibilities. I will be going to a Tea Party, the political kind, in Racine. Then we have to get back to business.

Yes, I have decided not to go to Treadfest tomorrow, at least I'm 90% decided. And I still haven't put the Alterra pictures up. I call the picture to the left "Ouch!" It has been a stressed out week and I haven't gotten much sleep. Working out tie ups and misunderstandings with the book weighed me down. The roof, peaches and yard kept me going pretty consistently and I started focusing more on strength training at the gym. Plus it is a good chunk of money just in gas to get down there.

Yeah, now the real reason. Football season starts full-bore tomorrow. And while the Packers do not play until after 3:00 pm the Bears and Lions are on at noon, our division rivals. A hurried intense trip after church service down to Lake Geneva, in my fore mentioned worn state, with a frantic rush back to see the Packers vs. a leisurely rest in front of the television enjoying my favorite team sport all day through, consuming mounds of butter drenched popcorn. I still might go, but I highly doubt it. Unless someone wants to give me a ride and be back by 3:00 pm.

Yes, in this age of notoriously poor customer service Create Space came through with flying colors. I was a bit shocked, taken aback, stunned, at a loss for words as they catered to my every concern and actually went above and beyond to solve my problems. Almost as if they believed the customer was right ...always. The publishing process (or self publishing) takes longer than you can imagine. I read one site that said expect it to take three to six months. The quickest way, much quicker than even three months, is to go the self service route where you buy no services. It seems counter intuitive but it's true. Even after the PDF reviews are over the prep to print a proof is up to three times longer with the paid service ( up to 15 work days vs 5, where I was expecting maybe 2). There was my beef as I learned the time lines. They knew I have little money and wanted things done as fast as possible, so they expedited my service to make up for not making things clear (and maybe one or two other things) as I suggested I wanted to go self service some weeks earlier. And it most likely helped that my book isn't too long. But not having worked with PDF's before, the paid service they guided me to was appropriate. I should get a final proof this coming week and if everything is OK my e-sales page should be up by the end of the month and my simple attempt at marketing complete. I hope to get my next book to them by the end of the year, if not sooner.

Ladders

I didn't get up on the roof Tuesday due to high winds, gusts up to 50mph. Nor did I go on the, again, supposedly last Odd Tuesday Ride since I had no car and it was at Crystal Ridge. And I had neither the car nor the energy to go to the Wednesday Night Race/Time Trial, having worked on the roof much of the day and picking peaches as well as getting to the gym. Getting out the big ladder for the roof work and the step ladder to harvest the peaches. So it has been up and down the ladders and it will be again today, though I start my day with a bit of writing. (I'll be lucky to have the second proof of my book in the mail by the 15th, the first hopefully going out today, but I'm hoping the second will go to market.)

Yes, winds and cool weather make it feel like autumn but I'm sure we'll get a few more hot days. I'll be picking peaches the next couple days and have to process them some how. The morning glories covering our fence have invaded the peach tree. The cucumbers are starting to die back. Not the best looking in the picture but we have a few prime cucumbers still on the vine. The peppers are done. This is the best month of the year to get some new grass in. I have at least three types of grass growing throughout my lawn and only one meets my approval.

M-O-N-E-Y as the Lady Gaga song goes. We took some 400lbs of iron along with some other scrap for a fistful of dollars and then I took in our change jar to fill the other fist. Money to work on the house with. And looking at my roof is pretty disheartening. Then looking back in my wallet just that much more disheartening. Needless to say I don't think I'll be putting out any cash to race my favorite venue, the ski hill at the Grand Geneva Resort, Treadfest. An always fantastic event organized by the FATKATS. But I hope to go to take pictures. I should get my Alterra pictures up on Flick'r before then. If the book actually generates sales maybe I'll put out for the last and final event, the Wigwam Ultimax, just to show my rivals how they measure up. Yes, I am finding time to ride.

A trip to Menard's took a chunk of cash and then I have to keep making runs for materials per the demands of the job. I should get my road bike fixed also. Emery's is having a September clearance sale. Specially marked items were marked 21% off September 1st and last year's merchandise 11% off, and each day that increases by 1%, 50% off by the 30th. I have seen the bikes hanging a bit thicker from their rafters in the past but they still seem to have quite a few bikes. The economy is tough everywhere. I saw two mountain bikes well under $1,000 that would be great bikes to race with. Not really high end but perfectly capable of holding up season after season. Upgrade the pedals, get the shoes, helmet and maybe some clothing and it could easily go $1,200.

For the holiday we went to the Redbox and got "The Book of Eli." A really good movie. When the movie came out I wasn't really attracted by what looked to be another bloody movie but it was very good. It looked like some scenes were cut but I'm sure if you purchase the movie you will get the full uncut version. I actually had to watch it a second time. Good Movie. Buy it here!

Binge Writing

I have been consumed with the publishing of my book lately. Yesterday was focused on getting the cover design worked out and submitted. Wasn't thinking of the Odd Tuesday Ride as I was preoccupied and there was a good chance of rain. I also didn't realize that it was the final ride of the year with a Wheel & Sprocket sponsor providing free food. Until I checked the site at 6:30, late, and already had other plans. Maybe if the last e-mail said it was the W&S event and the last event... I'm sure nobody missed me or even noticed I wasn't there. I guess all the Odd Tuesday Riders will have to wait 'til next year. The one time I went a couple of yahoo tricksters kept bollixing everything up. More drops than not.

And today, after trying to work out some confusion with Create Space, but with nothing more to submit, I went on a writing binge. This being my fourth blog post of the day. But I did get out to the gym. Misao is exercising with some 'Corism' exercise clips she gets on the Internet. At least that is what it sounds like she is saying. It's all in Japanese. But the Internet tells me Corism is a car in Japan. And we all believe everything we hear and see on the Internet. Misao's looking buff and putting me to shame exercising every night.

And here is another picture from the Alterra Classic just to keep things interesting. When I found out our church was meeting at Lapham Peak Sunday and being in some funk trying to get the book all straightened out I was thinking of not going at all, but I had said I would go to the race on my blog so I went. I found this site some time ago. You can ride for affordable housing.

If you're an Archaeologist I guess you like the hot dry weather. It finally rained today after things really dried out here. I am looking forward to cooler temperatures and getting up on the roof. Have to get back to my next book too.

Yes today was the Alterra Coffee Bean Classic. First a few picks from the Hank Aaron trail work. Alterra actually raised money to purchase some of the right of ways for this trail as I understand it.

Ride into the Light!

People just don't know how to cross a street anymore. A ramped overpass under construction.

Somewhere in this photo is the one called Bubba, hero of trail building lore. If you don't know which he is there's no help for you. And there are always plenty of friends of the four legged kind at any WORS event...except where they are banned. Will discrimination never end?

One known simply as Dave enjoyed this piece of Heaven attributed to Kevin. A little hike to get to one of my favorite parts of the trail. After twisting and turning, up and down, a sharp quick rise and then another a bit longer. Where I chose to set up and catch most of the Sport racers.

Talk about riding tall in the saddle.

My first nemesis was holding the rear and made me regret not racing, seeing him and others struggling the slow and steady. He takes a nice picture. They walking parts I never need to walk. Didn't see any of my old rivals on the series standings but plenty were there today. And it I know I could beat them. Saving some $25 was more important right now. Some of smart mouth asked if I raced the Citizen class. I'll have to start wearing my kicking boots for just such occasions.

Used my super zoom capabilities to save some climbing. I was up there earlier and found it extremely windy. The super zoom doesn't produce the best photo but any mishap reads well no matter what the quality. I'll try to get the photos up on my Flick'r account and post the link on the WORS message board when I'm done. Haven't been there in a long time. I imagine everyone still has complaints about passing. What else would they post about.

Got this all done while watching "Casino Royale" on TV. Nothing beats the DVD.

It's Just Like Work

Yes, trying to get the book completed is taking up my days and keeping me late into the night. Just like designing and creating construction documents for a building you have to put all the pieces together so they work, and create something inspiring. The difference is I do not need a site or a client to produce anything I desire. Yes I could design a building out of thin air, but with no way to complete it, no real user group to make happy or inspire, the wind really gets sucked out of your sails.

But I have my own sites and buildings to work with. This old house we live in now and my property up north. A means to complete that and I'll be off with no stopping. Nice shows on Architecture lat night on PBS. Letrobe and Wright in Buffalo.

Most likely wont get to the Alterra Coffee Bean Classic until the Sport race. They sent me a coupon for a free pound of coffee for my birthday last month. Hope to get some good pictures. Should get out to ride this evening. Maybe take some snaps of the work on the Hank Arron State Bike Trail. Should make sure the batteries on the camera are charged. Will make a doctors appointment this week.

Production

Plenty of tomatoes and cucumbers coming out of the garden. The Peaches are just about ready. A little small this year despite all the rain. I have to treat the tree this autumn. Take in some more salvage this week for a bit of cash to pay for some roof repairs. I wish e-bay would pay off. I don't know why people will pick 'watch this (my) item' and then unpick it. If I pick 'watch this item' I just let the item finish without changing that feature. Just don't have the same kind of luck as this guy. A custom Landis bike for $5.

The riding...? Went out today. The Hoyt Trail is blocked with downed trees. I have an Architecture ride planned to snap some photos for one of my other blogs. I rode my bike to the Walker rally last week and found lots of other bicyclers there. On the way a black cat crossed my path with a tiny baby rabbit hanging from its mouth. I am currently not planning to race as I think it wise to see the doctor first with the way I have been feeling. Not when I ride, but at other times I've had some problems. Was good to get out today.

I will be at Crystal Ridge this weekend to take some photos of the Alterra Classic. The future of Crystal Ridge is in question, but someone started a You/Tube site that should help keep the course for the current user group. Makes me want to race, but the money is tight too. And the weight is still too high. Besides, checking the race results when I was at the Sunburst Showdowns I didn't recognize any names. Sort of takes the kick out of competition when your traditional rivals are no longer there. The Border Battle went well for Wisconsin again.

They have what they call rubber glove toe socks for people to run barefoot so to speak. They say it strengthens your ankles and lower legs better. Strength training that suffers when wearing sports shoes. When you work out of our house most of the day it is easy to be outright barefoot more than not. I guess that is a good thing.

Actually completing the book, getting something actually produced, is good for the soul. Production breeds production. Not always easy to accomplish with limited funds that cannot even approach the demands of what you have to get done. I think I took my book as far as it can go. A bit of confusion going on with Create Space but I only need to proof read my work a couple of times and I think it is ready to put into PDF, which hopefully will go smoothly. And then the book will go to market. So all my activities are benefiting from this endeavor. Except the riding. Have to get out more and to the gym.

I changed my profile picture. Maybe I'll use it for the book. And life guard dogs are so cute. And if you buy a kindle from this link I will get a commission. Not to mention, with a kindle you can download hundreds of great books for free. Anything printed before 1923.

THE HORROR! or, Our Trip to the Fair

Yes, there was no cream puff line. The first time in years we went to the Fair and when we got to the cream puff line there was none. Usually one would make several weaves through long stretches of what ever they call those barriers to get to the cream puff window. We simply walked up to order. And no young country folk working frantically to keep up with the demand. Racks sitting full of cream puffs. And talking to others and seeing a news shot on the nightly news it was the same. What has happened to America. And no discounts to spur demand. The horror.

A pig with a multitude of piglets suckling with great vigor and some how I managed to miss them all. No small animals when we were there like rabbits or ducks or the such.

We rested briefly to enjoy a bit of steeple chase before moving on.

Christmas in August? At least they had the Fair theme with all the farm animals. We didn't buy the standard $20 product from any of the multitude of vendors. Only one ladder manufacturer, unlike other years, and they didn't have anything that would help me in the roof repairs. Maybe I'll have to rent some scaffolding. I guess no one is buying hot tubs these days as they were everywhere at the Fair. Not sure how many green houses they sold but that's some nice green house. Misao called me embarrassing after my third trip to the Ocean Spray table to get a free sample. While at the Coke Zero promotion they said "Take as many as you like."

So what's going on with the Fair? No tiny animals. No one buying cream puffs. I'm not sure but I know one thing. "The bees know." Yes, we stopped by the beekeepers display. I miss my bees and think I know what they know. But how could I know. We didn't buy any honey. I was surprised at the excitement with which Misao pulled out all her cash and money from stashes to spend at the Fair. I felt bad we have been skipping it these many years. Still we kept ourselves from spending too much.

And she demanded we see everything. For those who like the flowers this was part of the DNR forest, part of the Fair grounds.

Here we have the Purple Loosestrife, an invasive species from Europe threatening the diversity of our regional ecosystem. I can tell you that the bees really love this stuff and the frames will fill quickly with sweet honey when in bloom. And talk about HORROR! They put a net around the invasive species and fill it with beetles that love to eat the Purple Loosestrife. This is just like the movie "The Mummy" where they put the guy in the sarcophagus with the flesh eating beetles. Good movie.

And don't think that the bees don't know.

This is the access I created to get to my roof to do the repairs. But it was still too hot and I didn't spend long up there. Taking a few measurements and looking to buy more materials. And talk about horror, they say the humidity is returning. I have to decide if I am going to remove this bush that has been seriously dieing back. Serious yard work to come as the prime time for weeds is passing and the prime time for grass is arriving, as well as cooler temperatures.

And talk about jobs, we saw this guy when leaving the Fair. I looked them up on the Internet and asked if they needed help, but haven't heard anything back. Without finding a job or suddenly getting massive amounts of sales on e-bay, unlikely, our last chance to avoid bankruptcy will most likely be the publishing of my book. Even cutting back on my free poker tournaments to save money on gas since I haven't repaired my road bike yet. The way the furnace sounded last year I can't afford to have no way to pay for a new one if it totally breaks down this Winter. Now it may be as late as the end of September before my book is available. I am shooting for mid-September to have it published AND marketed. They said November, using their paid service, so I cut them off and am going strictly self-publishing, having to give them the properly formatted PDF's...

How do you make a PDF?

I am sure there is a lot of checking and rechecking, just like in architecture, an endless process of making corrections and changes, in order to get a great product but I have near everything complete, well refined, including a cover design and questioned why they said mid-November, especially when considering some comments the editor wrote on the first of my two stories in the book.

They used to have sign boards telling you the proper way to eat a cream puff, but no more. What's going on with the Fair?

Dead Tired

Tired is the word of the day. Of many a day now. Haven't been feeling that well. Don't know if it is the heat or something else. Some say it has never been so hot. I remember frequent days over 100 quite well when I was much much younger. Temperatures we haven't reached. But I don't recall it ever being this humid for this long. Misao likes it. She says it is like Japan.

Three days of riding and then a trip to the gym today. Got in my walking and then felt a bit uneasy so I walked more and skipped any strength training. Oppressive humidity slows the pace but have gotten to several tasks despite the heat. One secret to putting up with the humid temperatures, especially when most of your house is not air conditioned, is to scrub well every time you bath. One of those long plastic like rough wash clothes to get rid of all the gunk coming out of your pores. Listen and learn young people. Why pay good money for a sauna when your house is one.

We have a free ticket to the fair so we need only buy one. Keeping it to a single cob of corn each and splitting a cream puff. I liked it when they had all the animals the entire fair. Now you have to check the schedule to see what animals you will be missing. Misao has found the rabbits in our yard like to eat breakfast cereal. She enjoys seeing them in the yard.... and fattening them up. We're going to miss the rabbits at the fair I think.

Dead tired, wondering if that cold ever really left me, I pulled myself out of bed this morning. Trying to make myself a cup of coffee the phone rang and I answered, eyes crossed. The copy edit on my book was done and later I looked over the edits and editors notes briefly. Pleasantly surprised on a confirmation of what I thought/hoped the work was. In brief, well developed and flows well with a spattering of mechanical issues. Have I ever mentioned that I do well at everything I invest myself in. Will go over it in detail tomorrow before we go to the fair in the afternoon. Maybe the pressure of waiting for the copy edit tired me out.

I guy I know at the gym promised to buy a copy of my book when it is done, and gave me a lead on another odd job. Then he said someone could take my book and put it up on the Internet so people wont need to buy it. Why he said that is unclear to me but with some security issues I've had with my computer it is something that has crossed my mind more than once. And I see the Mormons have a new ad campaign, showing themselves just to be ordinary people. Lets face it, lots of people liked Mitt Romney but his chances were/are very slim to none to become President because he is a Mormon. After 150 years and still having to try to convince people you're normal. You can imagine how it would be if your religion were only 50 years old.

Not clear on how the marketing works but my book will be available as an e-book. And if you don't have a Kindle, see the image and link. I put out real money to get a proper hair cut for a profile photo. Then found studios are really expensive for poor folk like us, so will have to take one myself. Got some photography tips from the guy who is working on the book cover. Most important, full zoom and the background should be twice as far away from you as the camera so the camera focuses on your image. Sunrise or sunset and use the flash.

The publishing costs are squeezing me but I qualified for a larger free poker tournament and if I do well, and get lucky, winnings will guaranty no delays. And a new tire for my road bike. $190 in on the book and hoping to keep the additional costs under $750. I have another book started and am outlining three more.

The humidity is supposed to break next week. I hope to get out to ride much more. I was falling a sleep at last nights mountain bike meeting. Haven't been keeping on top of things. The Ore to Shore bike race is this weekend. Same time as the poker tournament. I couldn't afford to travel anyway. Will have to update the issues and activities of meeting lore my next post. You'll have to read one of my other blogs to learn of any poker glory I may or may not achieve.

A man at the poker table once asked what is the greatest cause of death in the world. He claimed religion. I said, its people deciding who's saved or not. As if one could speak for God.

State Fair

Yes, State Fair started today. We hope to go this year. It has been quite a few years since we went and our financials are not any better but it will be a treat for Misao. And I want to see what kind of ladder systems that may be useful for fixing my roof. Always plenty of things for sale. I haven't been up there, the roof, as it has been very hot... and much of it is asphalt based.

Lots of rain these last two months and looking at my exercise log not much riding. I went out riding today. It didn't feel like I hadn't ridden in over a week which was encouraging. The Hoyt trails need a bit more drying out. A bit of yard work, but mostly reading, wriding and riting today. Will ride early tomorrow. Not much errand running or going to the gym as my old beat up road bike is too beat up to ride.

Here is the river in its natural state. A wider view than the flood picture of previous post. They claim 700 year flood, but that is just to cover for their poor infrastructure management. Throwing money at people for votes instead of taking care of the mundane. Sewers overloaded polluting the lake. Bridges falling apart. Always claiming they have to cut basic services and raise taxes. And this mayor did nothing that he promised to do six years ago MMSD is still the same and the flooding is still bad. Democrats.

Plenty of cucumbers and tomatoes from the garden. Soon we will be getting peppers and then the peaches. I pulled up all the patio stones to remove all the weeds coming up in the cracks. If my book sells I'll have a big bar-B-Q. My yearly bar-B-Q was the first casualty of loosing my job, now over six years ago. A leg of lamb and other assorted meats. And if no one comes it's just more meat for me. Those weak minded vegetarians and vegans are welcome too. ...I just don't know what they're going to eat.

Yes, my e-mails seem vulnerable again, stalkers, haters, thieves and/or just plain no goods just can't leave a man be. But I am sure if I had any serious security problems, or issues like being blacklisted, people who know would let me know, differentiating themselves from the scum. Just keep changing my passwords. I heard that a data bank system is in the works to protect peoples information/work on the Internet.

Heard this is a good book. Highly recommended by the radio talk show crowd. Yes, I get a commission if you buy off this link. And, yes the earlier typos were by intention.

Now we are watching "The Flying Scotsman" on TV. Why people set there mind to frustrate the lives of others is one of the great evils of the world. But some seem to enjoy it. The more the merrier.

The Alterra Coffee Bean Classic was postponed until August 29th. With the flooding, and more rain the following day, it was understandable. I heard the trails were not too bad as far as downed trees and such.

Metro Mountain Bikers had a trail maintenance day at the Hoyt Park Trails. More people came then were expected. And the trail was cleaned up in short order. Looking to get there soon. One giant puddle was still breaking the loop when we were there.

And we had a deer come by to inspect the work. Actually Misao spotted a deer near our home in the much more urban area of the city, but still close to the river. Some think too close to the river.

Then more chance to work, which is the extent of my exercise as I have not gotten out riding much. Digging out foundations by hand. Pulling up buckets of dirt. And today we hauled stone. My weight is down a bit more. They say it is the chemicals in foods that keep people from losing weight. Not only exercise but good eating goes to a long life. The peach tree is suffering a fungal infection. I will have to treat it in the fall.

They say sitting is the worst thing for your health. And I don't like it much but what can you do. Lots of driving for our business and now the writing. Hopefully the book will be ready for sale in September. Will work on my next book to pass the time waiting for the copy edit process to work out over the next several weeks.

Will I make a last minute dash into the race season? The local favorite (Aug. 29th) and my favorite and everyone's favorite still to come. And all nearby.

And Alois has called me his twin. He e-mailed me six days after his birthday to thank me for my birthday greeting to him. He said it was six minutes early. Everything just makes so much sense in Germany.

Stormy Weather

Hit with fierce rains one must wonder what will become of the Alterra Coffee Bean Classic. Not just high water but fallen foliage must cover much of the course now and only three days to race day.

And nothing points out our need for a new roof than over 7" of rain. Still a bit of a cold. I don't think I'll be racing. Just going for pictures.

Returned to my two finished stories and will polish them up. then sending to an associate who will do some editing before I try to self publish. ($200 to edit 10,000 words on create space) A pair of short stories. My other two stories to come will have to stand alone. I question the wisdom in using create space, but you can market easily on Amazon.

Breaks in the rain drew us to the river to see if we would be abandoning our home tonight. Fortunately the flood control plan is working for us at least. The sparrows were abandoning their nests under the bridge after this video. (problems with blogger, I can't upload the video) The water never went over the bridge. After midnight I visited again. The water was about the same. I watched a lone duck float right down into the torrent.

Sick Day

I have been fighting a bit of a soar throat recently, with a slight fever seeming to be looming just out of reach for several days. Then yesterday it broke out into a dry scratchy throat and nose and by the time the day was over I was in agony. Struck down. Woke up at 1:00 pm today and still feeling like crap.

But before it hit me Misao wanted dinner and a movie to celebrate my B-day. We saw "Inception" which I highly recommend considering the other options available. So no free Poker last night and certainly none tonight. Still not getting a new tire for my road bike. I should most likely get a whole new wheel. And none of my usual Monday errands that I do by bicycle.

We are starting to get cucumbers and tomatoes out of the garden. I guess the time to harvest rhubarb has past. At least one source I read said not to harvest after early July while most sources didn't mention that.

Birthday

Ughhh.

It's been a hard week to motivate myself with my birthday looming. Hardly ever anywhere near the happiest of days in my life. Visited a small portion of my family yesterday, sparing me the encounter today. A card and $100 from my parents. That took me away from yesterdays intended yard work which I took on first thing this morning.

Misao gave me this book for my birthday. About the 'secret of wealth, health, peace and more.' So I started reading a bit. Then Misao got back and we went to the bank and post office (had to send something I sold on e-bay) and then to the casino. Yes, to collect my $25 worth of birthday points and enter into one of their raffles. The lady told me to play and come back to get my birthday points recorded (I'm not sure that is true, I think you just have to show up). Our favorite slot machine was not working so we went to the one at the other end of the row. 2 cent slots. I put in $10 I won at a free poker game. I wasn't eligible for cash as not having put any money into the poker game but sold the promotion prize I won for finishing 3rd. Some form of alcohol. I burned about half the $10 in the slot machine when I won 10 free games. And in the process won more and more and more and more... free games. When it was all over I cashed out with $64.88, being born in 1964.

Happy Birthday to Me!

Or maybe this book will be more effective in the pursuit of wealth, health, maybe not peace and more. That was last years birthday gift that I haven't challenged myself to capitalize on yet.

My ride yesterday was cut short by a fit of coughing that stopped when I turned back home. Today I didn't ride but a challenge has consumed my thoughts. The grille at the casino will give you a meal for free if you finish it in an hour. Four burgers with four quarter pound patties each. My mind raced, working through the entire process of consuming mass volumes of red meat; four whole pounds. Only later to have my dreams seriously dashed when I realized that also included 16 slices of cheese.

Still....

Still trying to run through the whole thing in my head.

I have sorted out a massive beer can collection in the hopes of selling it all on e-bay. Unfortunately they don't sell well. Maybe if CSI or some other popular show showed someone with such a collection the sales would pickup.

But the real question you must all be asking is....

"Where's Alois?"

Alois is fine and well. Not a big soccer fan and preferring to live in the countryside he was not to flattered when I informed him that Munich was ranked #1 as worlds most livable city. A very German answer. He added:

"This year is a bad biking year. To cold, too much rain, no sunshine ..."

No sunshine.

Small

Here is Small. Would I really consider harvesting such cute fury creatures from my very yard? Probably not. Since I wrote my last post the rabbits have become scarce. Perhaps they are readers. It is always revealing to remind people of where ones food really comes from.
Now if I had a pellet gun with a scope that I could be sure to take out the rabbits with a single shot, that might be a different story.
The WORS Fire Cracker received some press coverage. WORS is now considering changes to their premier event, The Subaru Cup. Looking at the blog posts of their participants. And less than two weeks to the local Alterra Coffee Bean Classic. More confident in my health and dropping some weight I hope to make that one. But I certainly wont be racing in mud if it happens to rain.
Waiting for things to dry a bit from last nights heavy rains. Then call around for work and if none work on the yard and garden today. The roof cannot go without being replaced this year. Materials and equipment, if I want to do it safe, will be at least $1,000. The demands of the house and some odd jobs keep me from writing and biking as much as I'd like.

T3 is filming in Milwaukee today. We saw the second Transformer movie on the 4th. Misao enjoys the Transformers. I wonder if our local museum is a transformer in the movie. If so, what does that make Santiago Calatrava? Questions such as these set my blog apart.

Saturday night I crashed in the dark. I guess my bike lights aren't as bright as they need to be. My road bike front tire dropping into an opening between slabs and the tube popped and I went over the bars. Don't even think of how to fall. Four years of Hap-Ki-Do training nearly everyday, all starting with how to fall in various fashion, and it just comes natural like. Later, after working the route my wrist hurt bad, but an ace bandage and no pain at all. The next day and it was all better. Working moving dirt excavating a foundation with a friend. Lifting buckets, with a rope, filled with mud. Between the accident and the work yesterday I was left aching and exhausted today.

The rim dented, the tube pinch flatted and the walls of the tire were scraped up. A new tube busting through the older than old tire wall when I put it in. No riding to the free poker tournament tonight (poker highlights on one of my other blogs). Wouldn't take my mountain bike. Don't want to leave it locked up out on the street for long. It is too valuable.

This is bicycle awareness week. At least that is what the radio said. The Internet says it is in May. Public service messages on the radio giving safe riding tips. Should be riding more but getting in some workouts. Leg strength is good. 140 lbs each leg on the leg extensions without any knee pain. I don't need much more than once a week strength training to build strength. And don't injure, or stayed injured, easily. Must be the genes.

Now they say strength training is better for weight loss than aerobics. I say everyone is different and there are several standards among the population. My weight has dropped over 5 lbs.

Looking forward to plenty of cucumbers this year. And tomatoes.

Another type of lily in the garden. A hybrid. We have three rabbits in the garden too. Nice to have friendly animals that get use to your presence. I have named them Small, Medium and Large based on their sizes. Of course that will change over time as the smaller ones grow, but then I hope to call them delicious. As they say you can only eat rabbits in months with 'r's in them, as they carry a fever in the heat of the summer. Unlike dogs that are eaten in Korea in the summer, as it is said to be proven the meat gives one extra strength and stamina in the summer heat.

World Cup

Misao said the other day, as it first hit 90 degrees, "Put in the air conditioner!"

With the heat and humidity and the promise of rain, a promise that goes unfilled more than not, much of our time is spent in our air conditioned upstairs. The chance of rain puts the Wednesday Night Race in question. Do I really want to race in these conditions anyway? And the World Cup is on TV soon. The TV and computer both being upstairs.

I first started following soccer, just a tiny bit, when I was overseas working with a man from Cameroon. In 1990 Cameroon did so well in the World Cup that they gave Africa another spot. Yes at that time Africa, positions allotted by Continent, had only one spot at the World Cup. Africa now having six spots and South America, that I believe then had two spots, also has more spots. Could it be that soccer has grown in popularity because Europe decided to share the ball?

Then there is the scoring. Most non soccer nations complain that there is not enough scoring. Yes, there is plenty of athletic ability, prowess and talent to enjoy but if it is all meaningless, doesn't lead to a score, it is just frustration on tilt. Is it any wonder that riots are the typical after party to most big matches?

Then I'm listening to one game and the announcer comments that a player going up for a header was pushed aside in the air. He said 'if they called all those they would have twenty free kicks a game.' .... !? And we get to the real problem with soccer. The politics.

Is it any wonder that the soccer nations are prone to dictatorships (or monarchies)? Here you have referees that are constantly questioned as to where the penalty they called, a penalty that often nullifies a goal, was. And, as in my previous example, it appears they are not calling penalties that could greatly increase the scoring opportunities.

And no instant replay? Even for seeing if the ball cleared the goal or not? Does anything say backward more than that in this modern age?

And the clock thing. They just decide according to how they feel when the game will end. On the upside you could say it is a good thing that a press for the goal isn't halted by a tick of the clock. That a final play should be allowed to play out. I could think of arguments to support that idea... but why waste my time.

And lets really get to the heart of the soccer conspiracy. It was a brawl over a soccer match that the Archduke ran into that led to the wars of the last century.

Less than two hours to the final. GO GERMANY!!!

Checking the Internet have found the public workers unions have moved the most sacred of national holidays. The parade and fireworks for Tosa are on the 5th. No ride tonight to enjoy the rockets red glare. Storms are promised. It looks stormy. But no rain yet. Don't know if State fair Park is having their fireworks tonight.

We bought some cheap frozen pizzas and got a redbox movie to celebrate. Nothing says USA like pizza.

Made enough points to qualify for the monthly poker tournament. Good news on the 4th.

Dope Fest

Yes, it is the 'Tour d' France' starting right about now. Even with the World Cup still going on, how can one not stop to rip the pure white as the driven snow athletes pumping themselves with the latest man made concoctions design to enhance and go undetected? Unlike the 'tour d' fat.' I will not be at either event. The BBC did a report Thursday night on doping in cycling, namely the 'Tour d' France'. I guess they are still upset about losing to Germany. And France is easier to pick on, having surrendered before their final World Cup first round game.

Tomorrow will be a simple day. Clean and work on the bikes and work in the yard. Hopefully getting out for a long ride. But a friend left a message and requires my tools and expertise on a project. Don't know what the family is doing over the holiday. Hope storms don't frustrate our Sunday fireworks.

One Odd Lap

Yes the Wednesday Night Race Time Trials had their one and only run for June last night. Paid myself up current, $30, so I can race for free the whole year through. A good many of the populace came to run the 2010 course with the new 'HD' line finished this year. A 6.2 mile course. Unfortunately I missed two arrows and took a wrong turn. Going around the cap, coming around down the hill and back, finding where I missed the turn I added an extra mile to my personalized course. Finishing a bit late to start a second lap. And I was a bit worried about my health. Not letting my breathing get to heavy I finished at a 7 mph pace. But the climb known as 'craters of the moon' was a bit easier than I remember even with me weighing more than last year. Still need more practice on the trails. I have to tighten my headset a bit. But an +8 mph pace seems only a small step away.

And if the trails are not inviting enough check out the food. Meat and more meat. And for those with a thirst they always have beer. Brats and Italian sausages bought on the cheap from the Klement's store. I was told The Tour d' Fat still needs volunteers. I thought about it briefly, then decided no.

Rides

I've neglected to keep up with all the local rides. My riding and attentions have been divided (and did I mention some one poisoned our dog). The Fat Tire Tour, or excuse for a drunk fest, was actually the same day as our rummage sale. I was outside and saw them go through the far intersection heading for our local bar. Obviously doubling back as not to pass in front of our home. Fearing I would cast them an evil eye.

Also failed to mention the Miller Park Ride for the Arts in early June. We were going home from church along the lake front with many a bike filling the street heading for the finish. Taking an entire car lane as they should. With the light traffic it was safer. No problem for cars to use just one lane. As we came to a stop light it turned red. A whole group of bicyclists went right through never even thinking of stopping. Some bicyclists on the pathway were waiting to cross. They waved and smiled at the other bicyclist going through the red light and waited. When the light turned green for the cars, they then decided to cross. Against the light, placing themselves at the mercy of the automobile operators. They laughed. Lawlessness breads lawlessness.

Also missed were the 'Tour of America's Dairyland' series. And bike to work week. The week we had all that rain.

Mondays are a riding day. Lots of errands and no car. Takes a good part of the day with a stop at the gym, and then bicycling to a poker tournament in the evening.

And today, Tuesday, I made the Odd Tuesday Ride. Trying my best not to be influenced by their lawless ways. Picked up a new tube earlier in the day. It was good to get back on the mountain bike again. I had gotten a bit soft just riding the road bike recently. A bit rusty on the trails. The group became scattered and I left early. Misao called. She had forgotten her house key and I had to meet her.

Hope to get to the Wednesday time trials at Crystal Ridge tomorrow, but we'll see. After today's ride I didn't feel too great and may just do one lap to see if I can hit the 8 mph pace. My weight is still high.

Then there is the Tour d' Fat, previously mentioned. And the following day is the Crappy Bike Ride. Organized by the guy who can't recognize a good deal. The only thing wrong with that XTR crank set being that the big ring was a P-46 but was marked P-48. The 4th being a Sunday, we will most likely take our bikes to a local fireworks but not with the Crappy Bike Riders. Just a quiet evening after a long weekend.

Yes, we have a variety if lilies. Several trails have lilies planted along them but there is not enough sunlight for them to bloom. I notice the phlox bloom nicely in the forest along the trails but those planted in the open (at home and I planted some at church) do not bloom as early if at all. Our begonia died. I guess I put it out too early. Looks like we will get plenty of vegetables from the garden and the peaches are doing OK.

More e-baying, salvaging and odd jobs to keep the bills paid. Got a bit of cash for some old windows from Lisbon Storm Screen and Door. I don't think many people are going to Summerfest because of the lack of jobs. We haven't hit a summer slump this year, business wise. Sales are good and Summerfest isn't complaining either. It is because the people who are working have lots of money, putting in long hours and overtime, as it is too expensive to hire additional labor with all its government dictated costs. Still enjoying the yard work and the roof stopped leaking after my patch job.

Still haven't gotten to my rants on the World Cup or Verizon. Maybe next time.

Summerfest

Summerfest has begun. Unfortunately opening with a terrible accident. A guy at the gym suggested the tremors from the Ontario earth quake may have had something to do with it. Tomorrow the Subaru Cup begins, but like I said, we have no money to attend. Besides I haven't given the mountain bike a good wash (or gotten new tubes). Not good to travel without giving your bike a good wash. Did get my wife's bike and road bike good and clean though. I was thinking of going to take pictures but storms are a comin.

And another expense looms. Patching the roof, as it started leaking again. I was wondering where all the water was getting in. I was patching tiny cracks and couldn't see how water enough to saturate an area of drywall could get in, when my foot went right through the roof. I patched it and priced out the proper repair for the entire roof at Menard's at about $500. But that is at risk to myself as I don't have all the equipment to do it in the safest manner.

Do my posts seem a bit harsh these days? Did I mention someone poisoned our dog. The garden is a nice relief (sorry no bike pictures) but not like a trusting pet. Or a good long ride. Haven't had many long enough rides either. If the weather allows I need to ride to Emery's to get some tubes for the mountain bike.

Tour d' Fat is coming but my weight is going down, slowly, so I feel unworthy. My leg strength has improved with a bit of strength training and am looking to see how I ride Crystal Ridge when I get the chance. Was shown a convenient way to do the leg curls one leg at a time. Bracing oneself on the bench with one's arms and setting one foot firm on the ground. Leg extensions at 120lbs each leg without any knee pain or swelling afterwards. Just have to make sure everything in my leg is aligned when doing them.

The bad cold, then the rummage sale and some Internet endeavors as well as house repairs have kept me from my book though it still grows in my mighty brain. Have to get back to writing soon.

Tubeless in Milwaukee

Yes, I went to take a long mountain bike ride today and needed to change the tube on my front tire. I found the spare in my kit to be boxed but an old tube. A tube that also leaked. And I had no others. So it was a ride on the old road bike and I came across a bunch of rock n' roll types down by the river.

The WEMS race, according to the Internet, went off with only a slight delay due to yesterdays rain. The skies last night were ablaze with lightning, fingers spreading out and covering the entire sky. It was supposed to rain today but it looks like God blessed the Cyclopaths.

I tried to e-mail them to ask if they needed any help, Team Cyclopath, but their e-mail address was not available. The guy in charge always works hard and gets a good event done. I found him very friendly and good hearted though the team seemed to pay me less than no never mind. Perhaps the influence of the Spitters Guild. There power resting somewhere between that of the Mason's and the Lollipop Guild. And don't underestimate the reach of the Lollipop Guild. Just look at Britain. Once ruling the world and now... just look at their teeth.

And Brits certainly are not doing as well as they would like at the World Cup. The refereeing having set soccer back 20 years here in the United States. A game where the brain is a strike tool and ties are... WOW! We didn't lose.

Actually I enjoy watching the world cup (oooh, sorry was that supposed to be capitalized) once in awhile and those horns keep me from falling asleep.

So I was exhausted and didn't go spectate the WEMS race. Sorry no new pictures. Plenty of pictures from Sunburst on the Flick'r page. Even the cost in gas hits us hard as trying to save our dog this spring set us way way back. But we did have a rummage sale. A neighborhood rummage sale. So we made a bit of cash and then dumped off much of what we couldn't sell at the thrift store. Then I took all those old cans and some scrap metal in the old garage and turned it in for even more cash then we made at the rummage sale and then I put a bike part on e-bay and it is already more than even that. That is a bike part I offered to a gentleman in exchange for straighten the rims of an old beach bike I have. Only to read on his blog that people want him to do work for free shortly afterwards. An XTR crank set.

Tomorrow is Father's Day. Sent my dad a card but haven't heard of any gathering, which is typical. Will be available after church if anything pops up.

Put out some ceramic pots we couldn't sell at the rummage. Currently nothing to put into them. Arranged the border of cement blocks so I could place planters of various sizes in among the plants. maybe I should have just used them to make a grid, putting something different in each square. I once saw presented a garden, mostly rock, that was covered by identical frog statues marking out a grid that covered the entire garden. I found it very attractive.

Subaru Cup? Yes we made a bit of money but we're just too far behind. The Odd Tuesday Ride was rained out as was the last two Wednesday Night time trials. Have been meaning to go but have been busy. And now it is rain rain rain. It takes time for the Crystal Ridge Trails to dry so I don't know what the chances are of racing this month. More storms in the forecast.

Which brings us to the real question...

Sunburst

There wasn't a whole lot of sunshine at the Sunburst showdown. The 'Top Fuel' is the feature bike this year, but all high end bikes are in short supply these days, keeping the prices up.

The #1 reason I didn't race was money. The #2 reason is my weight is too high, or maybe it was because I wasn't over my cold. So I went to take picture and hike the ski hill. And the weather was overcast and very humid. I was happy I decided not to race until I saw and remembered how many other, even sport racers are in worse shape than myself. Many people decided not to finish the race.

They look like mice in a maze or perhaps ants scurrying around a nest. So goes the Sunburst course, weaving and bobbing to make most of the land available.

I took some pictures of the citizen (above) and sport races and recorded video of the elite/comp starts. I will get them up on flick'r today and you/tube a bit later. Sorry to those I didn't catch on camera. I could see the anticipation in the eyes of some. Obviously aware of my mad photography skills. And then there were those few spewing snot in an obviously aggressive and violent manner.

Looked for a new angle on the banked turn.

Obviously some took the turn faster than others.

Talked to Dave. His team has a new sponsor. Found a new product on my offers page, Ice Wraps. I think it is a bit late to get into the WORS photo contest. My video file appear to be too large for conveniently showing on the Internet. If anyone has some suggestions on how to fix that let me know.

Sick Day

Caught a cold this week but made it to the Tuesday Mountain Bike Club meeting. It seems Ning is no longer free. And NO I don't have lots of money. I don't know why people keep telling me that. They want to put baseball diamonds at Crystal Ridge and WORS is having a boom year with attendance shy rocketing. Though there is an unofficial boycott of the Sunburst Showdown because many thing the course is not up to standards. There is a race near Peoria, close to Milwaukee, that many will be attending. A race that always looks to be on the same day as the Showdown. And 'Ray's' will open in November. The deal is done.

Being sick I don't know if I will race the Showdown. Maybe I will go to take pictures. I need to get into the WORS and WEMS schedules and plan out the rest of the year.

The last significant ride I took I checked out the flood control project. Above used to be where the public gardens were. Below is something being built but I know not for what exactly.

I also did over ten miles on my road bike Monday running errands. That is how I caught my cold as it was warm during the day and chilly at night; using my new lights.

I stopped by the garden areas and talked to a gardener. They have an apiary there. We talked about the beekeepers association. I haven't been to any of their meeting in years. I guess it is legal to have an apiary in the city now. A fee and inspection by DNS required. Was also told of some places I may be able to keep bees within the county. Still haven't heard from the county about what is available I guess they don't work too late into the afternoon. Have a friend who has plenty of vegetables to plant but if I can't keep the bees there the cost and time to travel though small would be too much.

Misao bought some cucumber plants that I planted today. Dressed in heavy clothing I worked up a sweat outside and then rested. Then worked some more. Planted the cucumbers and did some weeding. A bit too close together but hopefully I can get them growing upwards. We really like our cucumbers. People give us plants and I stick them into the ground. Those small roses were given to us last year and have come back.

Looking into publishing it seems there are many more bad literary agents than good. It seems best to have all four of my stories finished before approaching a publisher. Not easy to sleep with my sleep apnea and the congestion. I guess if I had all this money people say I have I wouldn't be using the same mask I'm supposed to change every six months for more than two years.

The Holiday Weekend

I was worried about my lack of energy and went for a very long ride a week ago, very long. My energy levels shot up afterwards and then I crashed for the holiday weekend though I didn't take more long rides. Must have been the family stresses around the holiday, though I did see my older brother who came into town for the activities I wasn't invited too. You'd think after some 40 years I'd be used to it.

Yes, Hoyt Trails are wrapping up the flood control work. This bulldozer was doing its dozing over a week ago. I was there Friday and the plantings were all going in. The trees were done and they were putting in some shrubbery. Don't know when the fence will come down, if it hasn't already. Fortunately for the new plantings, we are getting some rain this week which most likely means no Wednesday Night Race tonight. June is the month for flooding around here. Maybe I will play a free poker tournament tonight instead, but who knows.

Not sure if I will be ready for the Sunburst Showdown. My weight shot up over the weekend. We went to see "Robin Hood" at the theater Monday, Memorial Day, and nothing says bloated like a gut full of popcorn and cherry coke. I'm surprised Obama hasn't declared the movie an act of sedition yet.

Misao said if I wore my nice shoes with my nice sweat pants (with a button down collar shirt) she would not walk with me through the mall to the movie. She would claim she didn't know me. I had to wear my tennis shoes or put on a pair of dress pants. I wore my tennis shoes.

Yes, we went to the cemetery(s) as well as the theater. It looked like people have decorated the graves and crypts of their loved ones far more than I believe I have ever seen before in the public mausoleum. And then we grilled up a bunch of meat. When we fire up the grill we have to cook up all the meat we have in the house. I said it would last a week. Misao said three days.

With the dogs gone the gardening gets more of our attentions. Even Misao was spending more time getting her hands dirty. It has been a bit stressful with the dogs gone. The mourning doves seem to enjoy our front upper deck.

On Sunday we went to a church outing and I shared some of my stories. People were impressed and suggested I publish in a magazine. I really don't know anything about the publishing scene. I do much of my writing (as well as my plotting to RULE THE WORLD) in the basement. I may get to washing and tuning the bikes today but will be working on lots of my blogs to clear my mind for the next story, already started, I will be working on. Five years of consistently looking for a job and only one interview. Been putting out at least two inquiries a week recently. Poker, writing, investing (actually made a little with a little), e-bay, Internet advertising and surveys, maybe I should buy a metal detector. Still trying to pay medical bills almost two years old among other things. The retail business just doesn't make enough.

I actually find the most job leads on craigslist.
